It's a shame the gorilla had to die but frick the dumbshit parents for causing it to happen. Watch your fricking brat when you go in public.

haven't read through the whole thread but i'm guessing it looks like this:

Parents: "Tragic, but they made the right call"
Non-parents: "frick and prosecute those parents"
Parents: "Why do you value an animal's life over a child's?"
Non-parents: "Because people are assholes"

That pretty much sums it up.

the zoo should be sued for not having caging that can keep kids out

GTFO. According to the story, nothing like that had happened in the zoo's 38 year history.

Is there any pictures of this enclosure? how fast was the kid able to get around/over/under the barrier and get into where the gorilla was at? I ask because that question leads to how much responsibility the parents have here compared to how much the zoo has.

There is video of the child in the enclosure. I'll try to link them from Twitter.

From the three short videos, the gorilla was dragging the child but I don't think he was being very aggressive. It's a gorilla and a child, it could've killed him in 4 seconds had it wanted to. I understand the decision, but frick the parents. Makes me sad/angry. Also, could they not have used a tranquilizer gun?

Is there any other way to look at it?

That's what a logical zookeeper would have done.

I've been to this zoo 4-5 times. Loved the gorilla exhibit. From my memory, there's probably a 4 foot wall where people can peer over, and about a ten foot drop from the wall to the enclosure. But I could be misremembering or maybe the child fell in a different spot.

To the poster questioning the zoo's liability- that's absurd. Go to any zoo in America. It's easy to get in the cage of a dangerous animal if you want to, at any of them. I don't think you can blame the zoo.

How long does it take for whatever tranquilizer they had at that zoo to take effect?

Article I found, says the zoo officials were worried the tranquilizer would take too long.

My question would be, what would have happened if the gorilla(400lbs) was shot(bullet) and landed on the child?

How did the kid manage to fall into the enclosure?
Where were the parents?

After seeing the videos on Twitter, I think the zoo for sure made the right call. Yeah it looks like the gorilla is just "playing" with the boy but you've got to remember the gorilla could snap his neck or crush his skull with one move. It's sad they had to kill the gorilla. But under the circumstances, they had no other choice.

I'm a parent and it blows my mind they didn't at least try to tranq the gorilla first.

To those that say the tranq gun was not easily available, well was a gun easily available? It seems like you could make a tranq so powerful that the animal may not survive, but that chance is better than a gun shot.

The zoo should sue the parents for the cost of replacement. The kid is 4, not 14. How do you let a 4 year old get far enough away from you to do this?

I agree. It's the obvious choice to save a child's life.

The zoo officials are wildlife professionals. It sucks.

I wonder if that gorilla had ever been tranquilized before, maybe a medical procedure? Anyways, was thinking about if officials had ever seen its behavior after being tranquilized to better assess how it would act? No doubt a different situation with a live child around the gorilla, but still.

Did they shoot it in the head with a high power rifle? They must have super thick skulls. It's not like anything but a head shot would kill the gorilla instantly also, you miss by an inch or 2 and that gorilla kills the kid for sure. It's not like a gun shot is a 100% guarantee.

That looked like a silverback male? I mean i bet that gorilla is worth $1 million or more. Certainly seems the parents should have some form of legal or civil negligence IMO.
