They said no one has fallen into the gorilla exhibit in 38 years. You can't prevent everything.

Absolutely the right decision.

bullshite.

The right decision would have been for the four year old's obviously sorry arse, neglectful parents/guardians to have been watching the child so that this never would have happened in the first place.

Hop in that time machine all zoos keep on hand in the event a child falls into an exhibit.

why did it take 10-12 minutes?

Wtf were the parents doing while their child "fell" into the enclosure?

For real, tho...it said the gorilla had been, for lack of better wording, "in possession of" the 4 yr old for 10 minutes..but then they turn around and say that using a tranquilizer dart would have been ineffective due to the time necessary for it to work.

Well, instead of waiting ten minutes and then killing the gorilla, why couldn't they have immediately used the tranquilizer option? It would have been unconscious long before ten minutes had passed.

And had the gorilla intended to harm the boy, it seems as if he would have done that long before ten minutes had gone by.

I still say that whoever was supposed to be in charge of supervising the four year old was blatantly neglectful. With all of my children and our many, many, trips to the zoo, I never, ever took my eyes off of them...especially when we were viewing animals that were seperated only by a moat. The ONLY way they would have had the opportunity to slip thru or over railing and fall into the moat would have been if I had taken my eyes off of them long enough for it to have happened. And that would have absolutely been my fault had it occurred.

ETA: Tiguar..if I could figure out how to build a time machine, saving the four year old and, hence, the gorilla wouldn't be the only things I'd change about the past. I'd be a busy, busy lady.

An endangered animal is dead because of parents' negligence with their child. Why is it ridiculous that they be held responsible for this gorilla's completely avoidable death?

It's not like there's a tranquilizer gun sniper just perched up 24 hours a day waiting for something like this to happen.

You're an expert on Gorrilla behavior?

1) Nobody's perfect, I seriously doubt the parents just wondered off and left their child unattended. I can easily see how this could happen. Doesn't make them bad people.
2) There was a fence AND a moat.
3) Even if it is their fault and they are blatantly negligent, do we let an innocent child die because his parents took their eyes off him for a couple of minutes?

Because this isn't Jurrasic Park. They don't have armed guards roaming around with a tranquilizer gun. I would suspect they are all in a central office behind lock and key, and typically reserved for veterinary procedures.

I think you can quite reasonably make it completely impossible for a 4-yr old to infiltrate something containing dangerous animals.

True.Just seems as if the response time and, therefore, the option of doing so, would have been much quicker than ten minutes.

I have an ex-husband whose behavior was similar and whose intelligence level was subpar to a gorilla's...same with his family. Does that count?

I personally believe it would not have happened had the parents been watching. The fact that, as you pointed out, there was a fence and a moat supports my premise..it would have had to take considerable effort for the child to have made it over both and would have given his parents even more time to have stopped him. I never said I would have chosen the gorilla's life over the child's life..that's just crazy..but I think the necessity to have to make a choice could have been prevented.

If you use tranquilizers on the gorilla you run the risk of him getting addicted to them.

Then he starts snatching kids into the enclosure daily just to get his fix.

Before you know it he moves on to heroin and stealing from the zoo to pay for his addiction.
