I'm amazed at the outrage. It's a fricking male gorilla. Don't male gorillas kill young male gorillas?

Don't be surprised. Idiots think animals like gorillas frolic and eat leaves all day while living in harmony singing in a drum circle when human eyes are absent.

Tough break for the gorilla. It's unfortunate, but the zoo can get another one.

His parents should pay a huge fine or have legal action threatened against them. Sure, the kid should have been saved, but the parents shouldn't be let off the hook so easy.

Sorry.,. But I blame the parents here.... If you take a child to a public venue, YOU should know where he is at all time. They should NOT have killed the animal. I understand that a human was in danger(I guess) but too bad. If the parents had done THEIR job.... We would not be having this thread......

like when you lost your daughter in your trailer park and you came to this board crying?

The Zoo is the one who isnt going to get off easy. How the hell do they have a gorilla enclosure with rails short enough for a 4 year old to get over?

I've read the whole thread knowing exactly how this type of thing goes down on here. The amount of childless, and relatively soulless individuals on here is astronomical.

A kid runs into an open zoo exhibit while there with his family and this place wants the parents to be charged and the kid to meet his maker due to his "stupidity?" I mean for frick's sake this place is off its rocker sometimes.

Exactly. I see all these people on here and FB saying how this gorilla was "protecting" the kid. Is this how far down the stupid scale we've slid? It's a wild, territorial animal with the strength to rip a human apart and is known to kill trespassers and the young of other apes. It does not possess reason, logic, or the ability to sympathize with an injured human child. It operates on instinct. It does not see the kid as a harmless child in need of help. All it sees is an outsider coming into its territory.

You're an ignorant motherfricker. This wasn't some 16 year old acting a fool. It was a 4 year old. He is still a year away from kindergarten - a grade where the alphabet and your primary colors will get you an A+ - and you think he deserved to die.

He's just showing his ignorance. No sane person should expect s 4 yr old child to be able to comprehend the danger in this situation.

How can people say this and simultaneously say that America is soft and full of pussies? Helicopter parents are universally hated on this board and others, yet that is the ONLY way to prevent freak accidents.

I'm a parent. I'd like to think that there is no possible way this could happen to me, but in reality I understand that it is entirely possible. Bad things happen to good people sometimes.

I like to figure out which side of an argument PJ is on, and then take the other side. 100% of the time, it works every time.

I guess as a parent, and I assume others think the same way, my first thought is this is a tragic accident. Could it have been negligent? Sure, but on the same token, this could have been a freak accident. Are you going to put kids on a leash until they're 10? What is the solution to an accident, if that's what this was?

If the parents were having trouble controlling the kids all day and they're running amuck, then yeah they're at fault.

If the family is standing around enjoying the exhibit and the 4 year old takes off into the damn pit, I don't know how you can fault the parents, especially to some civil or criminal threshold.

I didn't read it, but some article was floating around facebook titled "Raise your hand if you've never lost your child", and yep. It happens so fast with little ones. My boy can vanish just in our house in the blink of an eye (he's 2). The shame the parents are getting over this is absurd.

I agree that the correct thing was done and the Gorilla needed to be killed to save the child. But your definition and mine of "helicopter parents" must be completely different.

I've raised 4, and keeping track of a 4 year old at all times, at a zoo, should be parenting 101, not helicoptering. I get it if you're talking about an older child. But 4 years old? You think it's helicoptering to keep eyes and hands on them at all times at a gorilla exhibit? Or actually, anywhere else in a public domain crowded with strangers?

I don't get that line of thinking.

Exactly. I mean losing track of them for 5 seconds and this could be you and your wife. I've got two kids under the age of 3 with another on the way. We take what I consider to be extreme caution with our kids, but I've come to the realization that accidents can and do happen. If you don't accept that, you'll drive yourself crazy as a parent IMO. Take all of the reasonable and common sense precautions and hope and pray your kids make it out okay.

They did the right thing. The parents are responsible bc it's their child. I have a 4 year old boy and that video isn't easy to watch.

I let my 3 year old run ahead at the zoo, as long as I can see her. She gets really excited at some of the animals.

If its super crowded I'll make her hold my hand at all times, but if its a normal crowd with families, I'm not making her hold my hand at all times.

Again, helicopter parenting really has nothing to do with infants and toddlers. It's more to do with trying to control every aspect of their lives as they get into their teen and college years. You can't be TOO protective of a child. They're not learning life lessons at that point. You're just trying to keep them alive while they learn to stop shitting their pants.

I agree. At that age you've got to watch them like a hawk, especially when out somewhere like a zoo.
