BURLINGTON, N.C. — A lion killed a young worker at a wildlife conservatory Sunday after it got loose from a locked space, the center said.

Alexandra Black, 22, of New Palestine, Indiana, was killed after being attacked by the lion in an enclosure that was being cleaned at the Conservators Center, news outlets reported, citing a statement from the Caswell County Sheriff’s Office.

The lion was shot and killed after attempts to tranquilize the animal failed, deputies said.

A "husbandry team" led by a professionally trained animal keeper was carrying out the routine cleaning when the lion somehow got loose, the center said in a statement.

It wasn't clear how the lion escaped the area that was supposed to be locked, said the center, which is closed until further notice.

The lion had a taste for human blood. It was right to put him down. Damn shame about the zoo worker though.

While I won't fume, it's something I don't quite understand.

Just keep tapping the thing full of tranq's until it finally goes to sleep.

Why kill it?

It was just a lion doing lion things.

Well if i was attacked, on the small chance that I was still alive, I would want my coworkers to come check my body as soon as possible to make sure that I was actually dead as opposed to just waiting for the tranquilizers to take effect.

Understood. But I'm guessing it was pretty clear that she was dead, hence the initial efforts to use tranquilizers on the lion.

That was my thought. Poor girl...hopefully, she didn't see it coming, because I couldn't imagine the fear that must coarse through your body coming face-to-face with a lion.

Likely a quick death if it bites and clamps down on the neck, severing the spinal cord.
