Did you read the article? I don't think so, because that is not what it said.

quote:

“We are not downgrading the importance of Zika,” said Dr. Peter Salama, executive director of the W.H.O.’s health emergencies program. “We are sending the message that Zika is here to stay and the W.H.O. response is here to stay.”

yeah, if you're the parent of one of those kids with microencephaly, I'm sure you think it was overblown.

A lot of people died from swine flu and a shite ton more were hospitalized--i wouldn't say it was overblown.

Zika has been known since 1940's but not to cause acephaly.

It is only sensationalized now because there is a company that can make money on prevention by selling genetically altered mosquitoes that cause the larvae to be non viable thus reducing their numbers.

Intrexon is the company that produces the mosquitoes.

I don't need the read the article. If you have read any actual medical journal, there has never been anything to truly panic about. There has always been a multitude of things that can happen during pregnancy that will compromise the fetus. Getting the flu, getting chickenpox, etc etc. All of which is highly more probable than contracting Zika, and all of which have a higher chance of compromising the fetus if contracted compared to Zika. The data has always been there. But this became the boogie man just like swine flu

And, yes, swine flu killed people, just like Zika caused birth defects. However, so do many other things that don't cause panic
