A young girl from Los Angeles County who traveled to El Salvador was infected with the Zika virus, officials said Tuesday.

The infection, which usually has no symptoms, worries public health experts because it appears to be linked to a recent spike of a serious birth defect in Brazil.

Officials said that travelers should take precautions when visiting other countries, and that some people should postpone their trips abroad.

sure, just another tourist, but there's one huge flaw

But the CDC estimates 80% of people infected with the virus have no symptoms

so stats say that for every 1 that is reported 4 go unnoticed and are spreading it this very minuite

How are they spreading a mosquito-borne illness every minute?

On a Louisiana based message board you need to put periods to distinguish between LA and L.A.. That is, unless you are just trying to troll.

I don't think they have the Aedes mosquitoes out there so it can't really spread according to what little I have read.

Edit: Just read the LA Times article about this infection and apparently they have been detecting Aedes larvae in CA now.

Here's a question possibly no one can answer... If one catches the Zika, is it in his/her blood for a lifetime? This seems like a fantastic way to essentially sterilize a large portion of the population, especially with the Summer Olympics being held in prime Zika territory (Brazil) this summer.

Appears to clear in approximately 21 days, but this may be skewed by the high percentage of patients without symptoms.

If this virus is the "big one" , I find it quite poetic that it won't do anything but slowly kill off humans through attrition rather than outright killing us one by one. We have all suspected nuclear weapons, ebola, HIV, mad cow, the plague, fire and brimstone etc, would be the cause of our undoing for thousands of years. We might just get the one that stops letting us have viable children and we slowly die off due to no reproduction.

Doesn't zika only stay in the blood for a couple days to a week? I doubt it is spreading like wildfire in VA and CA by mosquitos.

actually, I just found out about it, but apparently we've had 3 cases in Florida, Birth defect in Hawaii, a case in Texas, and 2 in Illinois

quote:

three new confirmed cases in Florida and two others in Illinois.

Texas and Hawaii have also reported cases, including one linked to a baby born in Oahu with microcephaly, a condition involving a malformed skull and brain.

so I guess it's not really coming, it's here

is this a transmitted disease? or can it only be obtained from a mosquito bite?
