Well part of the problem with the discussion is making it seem like those things are mutually exclusive. They are not.

There are plenty of reasons for a personal vehicle, but I don't think people realize how significant a departure exclusively building cities around cars is with respect to human history. Humans before the car had become extremely good at designing cities. Those cities included public spaces that are vital, both to the community and to make private property meaningful. We've lost that aspect of public spaces. There are very few places in America left where you can exist without paying for the privilege of using them.

Designing exclusively around personal vehicles also increases associated costs for municipalities, which makes those municipalities more difficult to run.

The OT when we spend $3 billion to add another lane so your commute on I-12 goes from 2 hours to 1.75 hours: HECK YEAH BROTHER, FREEDOM

The OT when someone suggests city planning that incorporates public transit: frickin commie wasting MY American dollars for your SOY BOY BUG EATING

They're angry at you that our cities aren't as walkable and we don't have as many trains as the eurotrash.

If only you would accept that urban lifestyle, they could have so many more things.

97% of the US is rural. Mixed use, trains, urban planning doesn't make sense in most of the US so it's not a one size fits all fix.

But 80% of the population lives in cities. Not only cities, but a select few cities along major ports and logistics hubs, where there are jobs, services, etc. There are absolutely places where robust public transit makes more sense than everyone having a personal vehicle (or two). What you aren't acknowledging is that most post-war infrastructure was exclusively built around the car, which makes the system one size fit all, but just in a way you like.

A large portion of America is just strip malls and parking lots, not dense urban infill.

if the suburbs and areas outside the city weren’t taxed for said inner city public transit. maybe you wouldn’t need to bitch soo much.

You make some good points. And I’m not against public transit or good city planning. I’m just against being forced to live in a concrete jungle by the government.

But my larger point is that I don’t believe there really isn’t much legitimate city planning at all anymore because 97% of our politicians are corrupt stooges.

It does when most of the people live in cities and urban environments.

How do you think we ended up with roads everywhere? Imminent domain by the government to build more roads.

Government gave you the concrete jungles...

Investing in smart public infrastructure isn't forcing people into cities any more than not doing so is forcing people to move out of cities.

Correct. The people managing the funding have little to no expertise in planning. They rely on experts and those experts don't have the best interests in mind.

Our urban areas usually are more technologically advanced. They have automobiles now, which are a step up from horses and bikes.

Its a brave new world.

By that logic, the city dwellers shouldn't be taxed for the tens of thousands of miles of rural highways, right?

It's also the natural progression of a society to move from rural to urban as it advances. Which is what is happening in the US at this point.

Dont gas taxes fund maintenance on these things?

Those who drive more, pay more.

Not even close.

It would destroy communities if gas taxes had to pay for roads.
