Your first cell phone? When, where, why, and what?

Nokia 5110, for those who are young...
The pager thread got me thinking about cell phones. My first cell phone was a Nokia 5110. I bought it after I left active duty in the USMC and moved back to Louisiana in February 2000. I was 23 years old. Our child was small and would now be with my grandmother when we were both at work. At the time, we had no other reason to buy one.
....a few months later, I was addicted to Snake and sending very short text messages (since it took foreverto type). Damn technology!
When did you get your first cellphone? What was it? Was there a specific reason you got it/bought it?

somewhere early-mid 90s. bag phone which had to be plugged into power to work. 100 minute plan for $50 month.
Coverage sucked in almost every area.

Brick Nokia in maybe 2001 or 2002. Those things were indestructible and the battery lasted for days.

This one below, probably like '98 or so? It was a regional plan I remember, my whole family got them at the same time. My mom had a flip phone Motorola before then.

I got a hand me down Motorola for Christmas I think in 1995 or so. I was around 11. My parents wanted to be able to reach me when I would be out on my bike for several hours at at a time.

1994, wife was expecting our first child and a guy I worked with had told me about having to pull off the road to deliver their child on the way to the hospital. I was pretty tight money wise, but wanted no part of that potential. I don’t remember the type of phone, but it actually took AA batteries that I would recharge.

Same, but when I was a Soph in HS in 2001. Parents got it for me when I got my first car.
ETA: No text and I think our entire family had like 400 minutes per month

This is the same phone I had. I was 12 or so, and my parents gave me prepaid minutes, and about 30 text messages a month.
I was on top of the world with the Snake game available at my fingertips though.

1996 when I moved to SD, I think it was a Nokia, I didn’t get a razor till about 2001 or so.
I remember the first time I got a text message and had to press the letters multiple times to get numbers or a capital letter.
It wasn’t until I purchased a iPhone in about 2007 or 2008 that I could really appreciate the ease of texting.

I think it was a Qualcomm POS that Sprint sold in 1999. I only had it for a few months and got out of my contract because the service was so bad.
This looks like it was it.

The first law firm I worked for installed one similar to this in my car.
As for a handheld I got a Nokia 1011 about a year or so later.

Got my first cell phone around 1998 or so. Couldn't afford the Nokia so I had to go with the Ericsson.
