2-3 years old they were given cheap tablets that have educational tools and games. They get those when we take road trips and on occasions when there isn't anything else to do, mostly weather related.

They will share the iPad on occasion for about an hour to watch YouTube kids, usually before bed while we cook/clean.

It's a balancing act of introducing them to tech (which I think is important), utilizing it as supplemental learning, and not creating a dependence at a young age. Our oldest is good about not asking for it much. Our second son needs more conscious monitoring. Every kid is different.

I admit that me and my oldest have spent the day vegging out and binge watching Disney junior while everyone else went to the beach. We both needed a day out of the sun after 4 straight days.

Eta
I don't think we've ever given them technology in public settings like restaurants. That's social time. We rarely even take our phones out of our pockets during that time.

Start em early. Probably 3ish. The Amazon Fire Kids tablet has a virtually indestructible case, and you are able to restrict content by age. All you have to do is limit screen time if it seems like it's becoming a problem. It wasn't with my kids, they'd get bored and move on. It beats them zoning out to a TV show, at least they're learning to interact with a device. Just make sure TigerDroppings is blocked otherwise they'll be putting trucknuts on their cozy coupe.

I think something else parents should be concerned about is how much screen time we have in front of our kids. I’m sure my 5 year old finds it frustrating and confusing that he can maybe get 30 minutes of screen time a day while his mother and I check stupid shite all day long.

This isn't necessary at age 3. They need interaction with physical things and activities. Pretty sure there were studies on this.

Yes, they'll eventually need to learn how to move solitaire cards with their finger, but that can wait.

pretty young, like others have said time limit usage. Also use it as reward for reading books, cleaning room, etc...

my 5 year old daughter is very good about reminding me and the wife about the "no screens at the table" rule

My 3 and 5 year old use the iPad but it’s usually limited to their letter, number , coding games and for 15 mins. I’m sure my 5 year old will do a lot more in elementary school.

My kid had to use an iPad in PreK so we got him the Fire tablet for Christmas. It’s great to keep educational games on there and then download Netflix movies for road trips. My 2 year old learned how to use it as well.

I will bite and admit that my 22 mo old started at 20 months. We have seen an incredible advance in just 2 months. I was against it at first but I admit that I was wrong. From what I was afraid of the opposite has happened, she is actually learning patience, stop commands, and giving us the tablet when we ask for it. This heeding of commands is also helping us with swim lessons which is a weird side bonus. Her communication has skyrocketed and our Pediatrician is all for it.

As far as limiting use, thats a bit of a tricky situation. If the tablet use is controlled for learning experiences, would you limit other learning experiences like books and flash cards? We use all three, but there is nothing more positive reinforcing than when an app says "touch the number 4" and the child gets an Elmo song when they respond correctly. A parent's congratulation can only be communicated so much at that young age.

As always, there are a million ways to raise a kid.

Our 8 and 6 year olds only have those cheap amazon fire tablets and the things they are able to have on it are very limited to educational games and a couple disney apps. They got them once they were 5 but rately get to really use them bc they still havent grasped thr concept of turning them off when they arent using them. So typically they end up with a tablet at 3% battery after only using it about 20 minutes the previous time and end up doing something else to occupy themselves.

My daughter is 4 and started educational apps at 2. She is limited to 1 hour per day and half of that has to be something educational. There are great apps out there if you aren't lazy and let them watch you tube all day.
