I would have a problem with that. Why would I work from home only to benefit the employer? It doesn't make sense. Perhaps if it was a flex arrangement.....

I would suggest not being concerned about that.

I WFH and I don't respond to after hours requests at all.

My company prohibits it under terms of my employment agreement.

I’m 5 weeks into a govt job that is 5 days a week at the office. 8.5 hours a day. Leave my computer at the office.

I left a job that was WFH but on call 24/7, phone and computer with me all the time, even on vacation.

I’m still on the fence about it.

unless you sell cosmetics, or run your own business, then you should have put your clothes on and drive your lazy arse to work, and stay in the office all day

If they aren't paying me to work after hours, it waits until tomorrow. If the boss wants to make a fuss then make sure you let them know you'll be putting all that extra time on your timesheet (have this conversation via email so there's a record of their responses).

This is such a foreign concept to me, as a young professional, and now as a business owner that hires lots of managers, salespeople and hourly workers.

For one of my employees to have this attitude, they better be fricking elite. But few elite people have that attitude.

But it sounds like you’re a drone in a giant hive, so no one probably cares.

lots of variables here, if I'm a pipe fitter and at the end of the day the boss says hey 777, take that load of pipes home with you and fit them up for tomorrow, that's a no from me dawg, but the wife and I went to Cabo for a week in November and from there to Ireland for another week and she took a few work texts and emails during that time, mainly from customers and it had zero impact on our "vacation," she goes back to the office after we get back and the owner calls her in and talks to her about it, apparently she had a hand landing some huge additional accounts for the company and he put an extra 20 grand in her paycheck that month, worth a few minutes of your after hours time I would say

I wish. I don't read emails or Teams after hours but I'd have to change careers (in the back half of my career) to be able to just turn my phone off after hours.

Are you being paid to answer emails after hours? If not, I would ignore them and answer them on the clock. I realize this may cause conflict with you and your supervisors and if so, I would start hunting for someplace else to work.

Unless you're paying them a salary, good luck with those FLSA violations.

And it sounds like you're simply talking out of your arse or you're too weak to stand up for yourself.

You’re an hourly worker? Ok never mind. Makes sense now.

Timeclock mindset, timeclock job.

So far in this thread you’ve mentioned FSLA violations, documenting e-mails from your boss for future grievance evidence and whined about even a smidgeon of extra work.

You sound like a great employee.

Good luck in the hive today worker bee!

I find it hypocritical that a company would tell you working from home is not an option while sending work requests outside of normal business hours and expecting employees to respond quickly.

I do think this is going to be a negative byproduct. I'm pretty neutral, or at least in the middle, on WFH. I think boomer energy of paper pushing corporate drones wanting to have meeting about meetings and thinking it's imperative we see each other's facts because we're a team is ridiculous and inefficient. But 20 and 30 somethings acting like they'll "literally die" if they have to go back to an office is annoying too.

I know some professional folks who traded flexibility/autonomy (think law/accounting/consulting) for more bureaucratic corporate jobs (with more butt in seat pressure) in part because with that came pretty structured hours. Very much a "that problem will still be here when you come back in in the morning" mentality. WFH changed that because the flexibility increased and people were working on their own schedules. Now that they're going back in the office, I think they're going to have the worst of both - butt in seat, and more after hours work expectations.

So your employee should be elite if they have the expectation that they should be paid for their "after-hours" work?

I would reply back with the email that stated I could not work from home.
