I don't disagree but I bet if it was a million dollar donation, they could somehow simplify it.

I see the money that you spent for that Auburn education did not help with your ability to spell correctly....or was it the education you received in high school?

$$ talks is why.

I'm loving the fact that Lori's daughter is getting skewered right now

What idiot bribes her way into a school then says "Yea, but I dunno how much time I'll actually be at school" Ripe for the picking.

How is funding development not bribery?

“My kid is fricking retarded, but here’s $5,000,000 for that new building. Can he/she get in now?”

All of it discredits the integrity of the university and tells academically acheiving students that their hard work means nothing.

Because for a lot of the wealthy, where your kid goes to school is just as much a status symbol as where you live, where your summer home is, where your winter home is, where you vacation, etc. And attending that school keeps your shitbag offspring within the privileged class, and hides your failings as a parent.

1) If they were giving 500,000 to USC as a "Gift" and their daughters got in, no problem, they are a private institution

2) They paid the money to a third party who bogued up he transcripts....the third party got all he money and USC, for example thought they were getting A students who made it in wit the strength of their "transcripts" and entrance exam grades....and their ability to row?

3) The coaches were getting money under the table from the third party to issue out scholarships to kids that are not athletes

4) The universities never received the money, were never promised the money and had no idea this was going on

5) The testing operations ( ACT & SAT ) were defrauded and they operate across state lines. I've met some people that work for ACT and they take the integrity of their tests and operations very seriously. This is out and out fraud.....RICO style

It is, but that's acceptable to most people because other students who got in based on their merits benefit from legitimate donations. New buildings, endowed scholarships, etc. also help attract the best and brightest. That makes it worth it for the university to take a few shitheads.

The difference in this case is that the bribe wasn't leading to any benefit for the universities. The reason these parents chose this route is because donations to elite schools only make the difference for kids who are genuinely close to being admitted (waitlist, etc.) unless you're talking about an overwhelming donation. Yale doesn't need your $500k. These kids weren't on the margin, and fraud was less costly.

Some of these people are too stupid to get in, even with the relaxed admission standards that come if mommy and daddy buy a building. Colleges are only willing to go so far in relaxing their requirements for their standard admissions students, even if those students' parents are frickING LOADED.

Athletes often have a much lower standard of admission than your typical student. Even then, these kids were so stupid (lazy?) that they had to have people take the standardized tests for them.

We're not talking about burgeoning Einsteins here.

I don’t understand why you would bribe your way in at USC?

For a local hot mom, im thinking she was paying for her hot daughter to get her "Mrs." degree with a rich kid.

Her daughter is obviously not book smart with things she said. She saw going to USC as a next step local social thing, and her parents encouraged it.

Obviously going to a local jr college, and being a youtuber wasnt going to cut it.

Because, unfortunately many wealthy people think that their wealth entitles them to anything they want and tough shite for anyone else that isn't wealthy.
Pure greed and pure POS personality.

I have plenty of friends that went to schools such as UVA, UNC, Washington & Lee, GWU, Williams, GaTech, Emory ect. With not the top but decent SAT and ACT scores. The one thing these kids had in common that they all came from wealthy families. This whole scandal does not make sense to me. Rich kids Goto private schools and everyone else goes to public universities. It’s been going on for years. Some people need to just mind their own business.

They need to do the bribing the legal way, through donations to the school.

Going through a middle man to do fraud when there's legal avenues shows why they needed the bribes to get their kids in because the parents are clearly not super bright either.

When your golden spoon frick trophy grows up without any interest in academics or extracurricular activities beyond selfies and shopping, you have to grease the skids to get them into a good school. Gotta maintain the image of the perfect family. Connections to easy street aren't free.

About ten years ago I dated a girl that went to Yale and I used to go up there to visit...prior to that point I thought Ivy League schools were full of brilliant people. I quickly found out that they’re just full of kids from the wealthiest and most privileged families in America, whose parents get them in either through donations or by sending them to Ivy League prep high schools in New York and LA that cost far more than most people could ever afford and churn out these kids by the dozen. I met one kid from South Carolina that seemed to have honestly earned his ticket there, but he’s the only one that I ever recall.

Actually, it is that simple at places like Yale. They are private and do not have hard admissions policies, only guidelines. These people were paying 500k into the millions range. Seems like a new library building would have been just as cost effective.

don't care if the piece of paper says Yale, Harvard or Stanford on it, you still have to work. Yeah you may have more opportunities, but the boss still expects you to bust your arse. I feel pretty confident that an ivy league school degree doesn't match up with an SEC, Big 12 or Sunbelt degree when the person holding that "lesser" degree out hustles or out thinks the ivy league degree they were given. Management wants results not pedigrees. I bet the big tech companies and even Wall Street are full of people with degrees from piss ant little schools.
