So there's already teachers leaving the profession in droves (my son's school will be replacing 12 out of 16 positions this summer), but if we take away the only reason anyone would ever even consider being a teacher, it'll be fine....

We had a balanced calendar option for the upcoming year. Personally, I like it and see us going to it sooner than later. The traditionalists voted it down.

Year round babysitting now!
Teachers are gonna be super pissed that they have to work like an adult too!

Childcare/camps would adapt to new schedule. They’d have no choice

Skimmed the article, but didnt see any mention of when the teachers would reschedule their professional development trainings. Those are traditionally done over the summer.

I am quite sure that can be worked out.

Word is that the Nola school zone cameras have already been adjusted to start ticketing people year-round.

But aren’t there studies that say balanced calendars don’t change performance.

I can’t imagine that I would enjoy this if I were a kid. Even with two week breaks every 40 or 50 days, it seems like a kid would never get to truly disconnect from school.

I actually really like this idea, as the summer doldrums really kick in around late July for most kids.

My wife is a SAHM, so we wouldn't have to worry about childcare, but I can understand the concern for working parents.

And I definitely like the idea of vacations at different times of the year and not just summer and traditional holidays. That is a huge bonus.

The old system was in place for an agricultural society, every Tom, Dick and Harry doesn't have a farm anymore and the long break is not needed.

So will teachers be expected to work during the breaks and provide the instruction "intercessions" or would it be voluntary?

I can see where that would be an issue if there is no change in salary and teachers no longer have traditional time off but no increase in PTO.

God forbid you don't get your 4 months off every year

As far as the kids that go to government schools, what difference does it make? Government school kids aren’t really learning much anyway. Make it 6 months on 6 months off. No difference as far as education being received. Catholic/ private schools should be 9 months in, 3 months off for summer. This is how one gets educated. Travel in summer, volunteer, work, get hobbies. Let the government school kids do what government school kids do. They learn to complain, be a victim, and be disruptive to society.
