Please explain what Vitter would have done/would do differently right now.
Not start off by extending welfare to able bodied adults without children who just don't won't to work.
Not start off by raising salaries of so many public workers.
Not start off by extending Medicare.
Hammer the Legislature like the a-hole he is until they agreed to cut more spending and entitlements.

THIS. It's plainly wrong to cut it in the middle of the semester when students already obligated themselves relying on the funds.

It is just political grandstanding.
That is exactly what it is, but is that a bad thing?
All of a sudden, a large chunk of Louisiana cares about the state budget crisis.
JBE can talk about the sick, bedridden kid that will lose funding for his round the clock care, and as sad as that is, 99% of people don't bat an eye.
Take away public welfare for high school kids with a 2.5 GPA and a 20 on the ACT and all of a sudden people start to panic. It is working and I don't blame him one bit.
Suspending TOPS gets everyone's attention, but it isn't the end all, be all solution.
ETA: I'm squarely against JBE as our governor, but if this tactic helps Louisiana pull its head out of its own arse and get to the table with solutions, I'm all for it.

Current semester should be paid for ... Tops doesn't normally cover summer anyway and it does give people a chance to get finances in order (yes they should have perhaps thought about this before).

The students won't be taking the hit, the universities will.

He wouldn't be halting TOPS payments while simultaneously increasing spending on Medicaid and welfare work requirements, I can tell you that. JBE is essentially holding many people's financial futures hostage to gain support for unprecedented tax increases without adequate cutting to go with it.
He also wouldn't have increased salaries of employees after calling their salaries "too high" or "decadent". He would have kept them or raised them and kept his mouth shut about it during the election instead of lying about it to get votes.
He would probably be moving state workers to a 4 day work week, cutting state consulting contractors, halting raises for state workers, and doing everything he can to cut where he can to make the inevitable tax increase less impactful on the people of Louisiana.

I'm basically saying that this situation never has a "good time" to be discussed.

I honestly have no idea why y'all are mad/shocked that JBE lied, yet for some reason completely believe everything that Vitter promised.
Pro tip: They all lie to get elected.

No shite. I hate all politicians, but I happen to believe that republicans are much more likely to cut and save than tax and spend.

No. I don't.

Yes. They do. But as I posted in a thread yesterday, if I am going to be swimming in shite regardless, I would rather it not be with a Democrat.

Not to put the stink on anyone, but they're kind of a cult or Masonic order. They take each others' word over anyone else, they take care of each others' career over anyone else, they're smug, condescending towards ROTC/OCS commissioned officers and have an inflated sense of their own worth.
I'm not saying this is the case with every single one - just generally accurate for all but one of those with whom I've worked.

My god is that all it takes now? Not exactly a "brain drain" if that kid goes elsewhere IMO

As someone who doesn't know much on this subject, could you add more to your thoughts? What is negative about those that attend West Point?

Stafford Loans don't accrue interest during the duration of the loan and yes it is a government loan. Then are some other interest deferred loans backed by the gov. as well.
There are regular student loans that don't have deferred interest that go through the student loan banks. Mine went through nelnet and sallie mae.

The end of this semester. That way students and families have time to plan their course and consider their options.

His whole campaign was based off the premise that he was more qualified than Vitter to be Governor because he went to West Point where there is an honor code saying he will not lie, cheat or steal...thus making him better than Vitter
