Are yard games at weddings really a thing?

Rare, but totally a thing.

I went to one that was a day time outdoor wedding and reception (up in the mountains in the summer so nearly perfect weather). Everyone changed out of their super dressy clothes after the ceremony and the reception featured a bunch of yard games, including a kickball tournament, and fireworks. I mean, BBQ, ice cream sundaes, craft beer, explosions, kickball, what more do you f&%king want!?

It was a weird reception, for sure, but also crazy fun. I think it was a bunch of east coast liberals trying to experience what they believe a rural family reunion bbq is supposed to be like.

I rather be doing something than just hanging around talking with people. If some type of competition breaks out, I am in.

Inexpensive weddings have always existed, but since the emergence of Pinterest, DIY/backyard weddings have become a really popular. Candle holders covered in twine or burlap, handmade tags all over the food and drink, chalkboard labels for different "areas" of the space, homemade photo booth props with a homemade backdrop instead of renting an actual photo booth, etc.

I wouldn't call it trashy even though it isn't my own style. I'd rather see someone with limited funds do a casual, fun BBQ style wedding instead of them trying to do a traditional without the funds for it. A traditional wedding where they couldn't afford to do everything that ties it together sucks. (I.e. no open bar, shitty DJ, cheapest catering options.. but big fancy wedding dress, everyone in tuxes, etc.)
