Not sure if I’m the only one noticing, but we recently hired a mid level manager who I’m almost positive is drinking during work hours.

His demeanor typically changes after lunch, or becomes worse as the day goes on. He doesn’t cause a scene nor is inappropriate (fairly quiet guy) but I can see the red face and the few times I’ve asked him a question, I’ll get close enough to smell the liquor on his breath.

Granted, this is an office environment so nobody is at harm. He’s new so no way to tell what his normal act is.

Do I report to HR? His boss? Confront him? Mind my own business as he’s not in my department although still interact.

You should kiss him passionately on the mouth just to be sure he's drinking.

Tell HR and nothing else unless he’s on your team.

Mind my business and let him hang himself if he is drinking on the job.

However if he's part of my department and it's visibly affecting performance and/or overall morale, he either needs treatment or to be shown the door.

Is his drinking really affecting anything?

If not, just let him enjoy his drinks.

Could it be a medical condition? Diabetics can have an odor that smells like alcohol…

have seen this twice over the years. One stripped to his boxers in the parking lot. One wrecked his car/DUI returning from lunch.

This will 100% open an investigation and be a real negative for him if he isn’t actually drinking.

His boss?

How close are you. If you’re close with the boss, raise your concern to him and let him address it.

Confront him?

If it’s obvious then yes.

Always an option but if you think it may become an issue, you will always look at it as “I could have stopped it”

Just get it over with and ask him for his consent. Stop making this your “Dear Facebook” space.

If he is not in a position to cause someone to get hurt I'd mind my own business. Functional drunks can function at a high level for a long time. My step dad drank a 12 pack of miller lite every night between 7 PM and midnight and never missed a day of work and retired from the same job at 65 and has been retired 17 years. He was not in a position to cause anyone else any harm by being drunk for the first few hours of every day. I have worked with sevral people over the years who could only function with a half pint in them in the morning and another one in them in the afternoon. If they were in a position to hurt someone though I would say something and damn the consequences...

Stay in your lane and mind your own business

You go forward with that and he actually isn’t drinking is gonna open you up to an endless amount of BS.

At that point, you are now the office rat and snake in the grass.

I have a friend who works in a small office of 6-10 people. He does not drink during the day to get drunk or rowdy. He drinks during the day to quiet the shakes and withdrawal symptoms.

He does a fairly good job and manages to keep it between the lines at work.

He knows he is killing himself and he knows he can’t stop.

It’s a shame, he is a nice, smart guy and while not a World beater is far from the worst employee in that office.

After watching his struggles the last three years I would say don’t say anything and judge him on his performance.

Watching him go through hell the last decade was one of the reasons I quit drinking a few years ago.
