Honestly, this is inconceivable to me.
You must have multiple, loaded firearms in a home.
You aren't always in the same place in a house and home invasions happen at any time.

I live in a very quiet neighborhood but across a field behind us there is another neighborhood that's not so quiet. No problems though, just aware it's there.
A few weeks ago, in the middle of the day, I was sitting on the couch with my laptop and someone started banging and banging on the back door, trying to get in the house. Went to see what was going on and there was a young man who was frantic, yelling to let him in. Of course I told him no and he bolted to the next house. About that time, the police showed up, ran him down, and cuffed him a few houses down.
The point is, if the door was unlocked, within seconds there would have been a home invasion. Wouldn't have had time to do anything unless I had a gun next to me. Even then, it would have happened so quickly I doubt there would have been time to analyze the situation and take action I don't think.
Bottom line, keep yourself/family as secure as you can in your environment. If you're driving, keep the doors locked, when you're shopping, parking, be aware of your surroundings. First defense is situational awareness, IMO. If an incident does happen, it's usually so fast there isn't really time to react. It's so unexpected and the attacker/perpetrator has a huge advantage in knowing what he's going to do. Keeping it from happening or being aware it might happen is important.
That said, I'm glad I have weapons at my disposal and wouldn't hesitate to use them if possible.

Exactly my point.
In that situation, you don't analyze shite.
If he busts in, he's dead.
And I'm not calling 911 until he can't fog a mirror.

Has to be the best burglary deterrent in existence.
It is. No one is getting close to my house without alerting me and isn't getting to my family without at least getting messed up.

Get the kids and wife out and go after the intruders. No telling if they want to just rob you or not. You could be giving your family just enough time to get away. You distracting the intruders could give the 7 and 13yr old kids the chance to get out.
I am super aggressive in those situations, so most people probably wouldn't think it was wise to run towards someone shooting at you. I'd do as soon as I realized what was going on

And your scenario is the reason I have pistol.
FYI. Don't know if thread is due to this Houston story. Last night a dad hears window and commotion in teen daughters bedroom. Goes in with gun. Asks who he is and WTF. Daughter says she doesn't know the man/boy. He gone.
Dad murders some poor kid because daughter panicked.

-Tell my wife to stay put with the infant, but tell her to be prepared to climb out the window if she hears more gun shots. Have her call 911.
-Grab the knife and any other large blunt object from the bedroom.
-Slowly open bedroom door and peer down the hallway. Analyze the situation to determine if I should creep up on or bull-rush intruder.
-Head down the hallway and attempt to save the other children. Stab and beat senseless intruder with knife and blunt object. It's going to take multiple bullets to stop me.

Baseball bat by the bed and a desert eagle under it. Probably would wind up blowing one of my daughters friends up.

Without reading the entire thread, how many people have advocated "holding him off with a handgun until I can get to my AR-15" so far?

What a weird scenario. Anyone that would set off your alarm and then immediately start shooting children is on a vendetta and probably not even be looking for money.
Still I'm telling the wife and baby to gtfo and while I haul arse down the hallway with a knife. Ok, that probably won't end well but I would never leave my kids alone in that situation.

Grab knife, put wife and baby in safe room (2 story house)
Grab hairspray and lighter and charge down the hallway like a bull, spraying fire straight at them.
Oh yeah and grab a candy bar. To fix a sucking chest wound

Grab the knife, grab your wife by the throat.
Confront the intruder, while threatening to kill your wife with the knife.
As he pauses confused, throw the knife into his skull like Kurt Russel did in Big Trouble in Little China Town.
This is the only correct solution.
