Long story short, graduated last May with a degree in PetE. Been working with a small UGS consulting firm for about a year now, and I'm ready to move the hell on; low pay, uninspiring work, and career advancement from within seems slim.

BUT, beggars can't be choosers (especially right now), and judging by my application success history on Indeed, I'll need to gain ~8 years of experience in the next 6 months to apply to any type of work that seems meaningful. Just about every network connection I've made is actively searching for a job, too, or hanging on to the one they currently have.

Still pretty young, so I think if I were to go back to school to supplement my engineering skillset, or change my career path to something like accounting, it wouldn't set me back terribly.

So what say the O-T? I guess it's not crazy to assume I'm not the only person in this boat currently.

Stick it out in the current position until Oil companies start hiring again (lol)?
Go back to school and get a Master's degree in another engineering field? Accounting?

IS your current job one that would count towards that ~8 years experience for your dream job?

I'd just wait it out but I'm naturally lazy so take that for what it's worth.

My pipe dream is to reservoir engineering...this opportunity does not provide that, so I feel like the longer I stay here, the more the other opportunity dwindles

Masters in totally different field of study i.e. marketing, business, supply chain, etc. Need to supplement your PetE skillset.

A more technically involved role than the one I'm currently in, I'd wager. Currently doing cost estimation / project management type work, with little design to be done. Company I'm at specializes in permitting and annual testing.

Like most first time career jobs they don't always seem to be as glitzy as others. If its not too bad and benefits are decent then you can to continue to craft what you do and maybe soon a door will open for a promotion or another job. Its hard for me to tell anyone to add extra debt for student loans and then have to pay them off for the rest of their lives.

Well, judging off this LSU survey, I make about $12-k less than the average graduating LSU engineer.

I would argue my GPA was, at the least, above the 50th percentile of my graduating class.

That's the only argument I can hold at this point, however

Then my advice is to expand your job search nationwide. I would almost never suggest further schooling unless the answer to the question I just asked was literally "I need ____ degree"

My Eng. buddies have had to spread from Maryland to Minnesota, but they are all starting to settle into their "dream jobs."

Make sure that your resume is actually decent. There are so many fricking awful resumes that doom candidates before they start. Make sure to check your resume with people in the field who actually make hiring decisions. For example, the way you understand how to write a resume, might not be the correct way to write one to actually find a job. When you get a rejection from a job, ask the guy why, and what you could do to your resume to spruce it up. You will be surprised what people will offer.
