It would be a lot of work but would be fascinating to try to be able to track down the family and return those pictures

Part of the enjoyment of collect these things is trying to figure things out like a dectective.. To use what clues that you can find to piece together a who, what, why, and when.

Can’t be 100% sure, but it appears the pictures from the field were taken in China. From the topography it looks most likely these pictures were taken in Manchuria.

It is amazing to me to reflect on how a people who during World War II were complete animals toward us and others can change so much once they no longer were under the spell of imperialism.

The entire panoply of human nature is represented in EVERY large group - Japanese, Americans, Gentiles, Muslims, Welders, Lawyers, soccer fans, knitting clubs and comic book collectors.

Interesting that you say that. The tag that it had did say mention the pics were mostly from China...

What I believe is that this is from a training school.

In this pic you can see the Barracks and the training.

A few of the pics have writing on them in what I believe are names of his buddies... Like this one.

Like you picked up on.. A lot of the enjoyment is trying to figure items out.. Who owned, where taken, Time frame, etc...

A good start would be this man.. He is a Lt. Colonel in the Army.. Also the 29 on his collar is a clue... And these are all Army pics.

I think if there would be any way to find out more information would be through this pic here. Because from the looks of the pic I would speculate that this man is a professional entertainer.

Now this guy... I don't think that I would want to make him mad... He already looks mad.. It is difficult to see his collar insignia, but it looks to me with a jewelers loop to be two stars, with two large red stripes on a green background which would make him a Sergeant... Note the Gunto (Sword) lying on the table.

Very cool. Looks like they were glued inside the scrap book, i wonder if there could be writing on the back of the pictures, that would give you some info.

My father served on a submarine during WWII (U.S.S. Silversides) and when he was in his 50's he was asked by a firend of mine, "Mr. *****, what did you do during the War?" My father's response (with absolute steadfastness and conviction)....."I taught Japanese to swim".

Ran a Google Translate scan on those names on that picture.

Left to Right: Arahira Zoji, Kazuo Tokutani, "Manchu People", Rubashi Kaijo.

Not sure what's up with the "Manchu People", but that's what Google says it is.

Fascinating stuff.
