Do these still have a function or are these just cushy elected positions for BIL or pawpaw?

Has anyone actually done any official bidness with one?

Aren't constables in Louisiana kinda like a state version of a US Marshall?

It's a nice job if you're a JOP in an urbanized unincorporated area or city without a City court.

Like $200k a year nice.

Don't even need a law license.

ETA: Google it.

I think it differs from parish to parish (or county to county I guess). I know in some places constables have their own vehicles. Where I live (iberville parish), they serve warrants.

As for as Justice of the Peace. I was talking to a dude who is one and he told me people come knock on his door all hours of the night and its usually domestic disputes. He told me the two most common issues he deals with are husbands who hit/beat their wife and women whose boyfriend sexually molest their kid. He

And just about every time, they go to him, he calms them down and when he starts to call a deputy, the wife is usually begging him to not call the police (usually out of embarrassment). He told me I would be surprised by the people who come to him at 2:30AM. People who seem to be "the perfect family".

So evidently they see some fricked up stuff.

I got served by a constable to appear in court as a witness. I hope to god the US Marshalls are nothing like the maw maw that served me. I couldn’t see her arresting anyone.

You hang out at a bar in Destrehan called The Pit Stop, sell badges to local ne'er-do-wells, and play real life drunk driving Mario Kart.

They are commissioned by the court and do everything related to the court. Evictions, subpoenas, bench warrants, court room security, etc

In Bexar County the Constables Offices all run speed traps on the surface streets, their ghost cars are all newer and nicer that anything SAPD has. Pretty sure their whole budget is paid for by writing tickets, don't see them do anything else.

Constables basically are the town police in Jackson, LA. They do all the usual functions of cops, basically.

How does that work? Are there really people who are unwilling to pay their bills, but then when some dude with a 2004 Crown Vic waddles up their driveway it puts the fear of God in them?

Or is divorce / borrowing money just so adversarial a process in rural areas that they send this guy out every month by default?

Either way, it kind of boggles my mind. I mean, I've owed people money before, but we always just handled it through the mail / internet without some wannabe cop in the mix.

Constables get a cut of the debt when its paid.

They will serve the shite out of some debtors to get it.
