People are in this thread saying college is a scam, and you can be a millionaire by being a tradesman before you turn 30. I don’t know about you, but being retired and wealthy by 30 would qualify as a dream job in my book

I'm not reading that at all (and I'm not talking about people just trolling your arse at this point).

You do realize this is a rare circumstance for good majority of people, even educated folks, right? Pimping this is just as dumb as claiming all of college is a scam.

I agree, which is why there’s about 2 dozen posters in this thread that are total retards

No one is saying it's a dream job. They ARE saying if college isn't for a kid, that a trade can be a viable option for a living wage job. And that it beats working flipping burgers for minimum wage with little upward mobility. Some of y'all really lack some fricking nuance.

So trades are for those seeking viable options, while dream jobs are for college kids. Got it.

Is it really because of what they do for a living? Or is it really because of how they live?

Got a family member in a small East Texas town who is as you described. But that is because he makes horrible life decisions and spends too much money. Even with a white collar job, he would still be a chuckle head.

The trades are not for everyone. Just like college isn't for everyone.

25% more work than what is considered full time “isn’t that much.” Lol

It isn't. Most professionals work more than 40 hours a week. For me, 50 is the perfect sweet spot where I can still have a good work/home life balance and also make a significant amount extra money.

And he will make relatively that for the rest of his life with no benefits. Not bad, but certainly not what you should strive for either

Not necessarily. It’s relatively easy once you master a trade to turn it into your own business. You can make 6 figures as a carpenter, welder, plumber, electrician, etc if you are self employed.

I know an electrician who works on pump panels for irrigation units and such for farmers and he makes 400-500k a year

You need these people more than the college grads.

Someone has to keep tradesmen alive... and I guarantee they have needed college degrees and never stepped foot in the c suite.

Its not good vs. evil... its a balance. Trades can be good, Jobs requiring degrees can be good, trade jobs could suck or not be available, college jobs could suck or not be available.

A person making $68k individually in the state of Louisiana is damn near double the median income.

Well, they factor in people unemployed on median income... and the guy making min wage living at home. Besides, $68k in Louisiana doesn't go far for a family.

I heard a saying the other day that is quite true.

"The key to having financial success as a tradesman, is to have a wife with a good job."

If you start making $70,000 at 18 years old and are mildly smart with your money, you can easily be a millionaire by the time you are 40.

10% contribution to a 401k
5% company match
6% average return
4% yearly average raise

Would put you at roughly $455k 401k balance,

That’s assuming the welder is pulling in $165k by age 40, has a generous company match (if at all) and can save another half million dollars. I’m going to go ahead and call bullshite on that

When I was a junior in high school I would have probably jumped at this opportunity.

Trade jobs suck. Theyre on average bad jobs. People are simply lying or too ignorant.

Most tradesmen end up like you, drunk all the time, in rehab, and constantly looking for a new job. Don’t let your kids grow up to be like TigersHuskers

Not really looking right now but I keep my ears open for things that offer higher pay. Not sure what's wrong with that.

I'm not perfect but I'm also not a deadbeat loser. I contribute to society and pay my bills. You just come off as an insecure little bitch. I bet a plumber nailed your wife at some point.
