Parents are paying thousands of dollars to send their kids to "YouTube camp," where kids as young as FIRST GRADERS learn how to make YouTube videos and "create a personal brand." This is the most depressing thing I've ever read

Because today I’m going to tell you about YouTube summer camps for kids. No, not camps where kids watch YouTube all day. (What children watch on YouTube is another column entirely.) These are day camps where kids as young as 5 learn how to shoot videos, edit sound and create a personal brand to get them on their way to YouTube stardom.

So....it is drama camp and video editing camp all rolled into one?

I don't see the big deal about that.

Do you want your kids to be bullied in middle school? Because this is how you get your kids to be bullied in middle school.

We're about one generation away from kids honest to God bursting into flames when sunlight touches them, like freaking vampires.

Not in 2019.

It is basically a STEM camp. Here is the description from a camp I just googled.

quote:

YouTube is the place to bring your innovative visions to life. Make vlogs, gamecasts, tutorials, and more to establish an online presence and dive into video production. Capture footage with professional equipment and use tools like Adobe Premiere and Adobe After Effects to enhance your project. Put your creative endeavors together into a polished channel that's sure to draw followers.

Prerequisite: Ability to work in a team. Each student will be provided with an individual computer for editing and will share video equipment.

In this course, your student will:

Gain experience with professional equipment, including DSLR cameras
Edit video and audio tracks
Use screen capture software
Practice digital citizenship

OP is going full "get off my lawn".

If it’s like the stuff my kids watch, you have to learn how to yell for 30 minutes and make even the most mundane thing sound incredible. Use words like epic and fam.

Raimi and Spielberg started out with friends in a backyard. Tech is cheaper, editing tools are more in reach. Why not let kids learn something? Stay involved don't let em post anything cringey. Educate em on how others started low on the pole as kids and boom. Creative hobby.

People laugh at this but I know 3 guys personally that make over $10k a month just from their Patreon account. This doesn't count ads, website affiliates, their website stores, and premium content. 2 guys do it full time now and 1 guy still has a full-time engineering job.

The money is real if enough people think your content is good.

If it's just a/v club type stuff, it sounds pretty cool. I would love to have a basic understanding of how to shoot and edit video without it looking like complete arse. Just don't have the time or inclination to learn and practice.
