Marco Rubio a few hours ago: "We knew that there was going to be an Israeli action. We knew that that would precipitate an attack against American forces, and we knew that if we didn't preemptively go after them before they launched those attacks, we would suffer higher casualties."
Interpretation: Israel just dragged our arse us into a war.

Honestly kind of surprised (at the statement, not the reality, assuming accurate).
I was going to bed when this story broke and all the initial accounts (I edited as they updated) were Israel conducts strikes on Tehran. When that shifted to US and Israel jointly (in the first hour), I definitely had the thought along the lines of "if Israel started without us and it was either admit to the world we were jumping in because of their haste or acting like it was joint - would we ever say that?"
I'm guessing the reality is a bit different - that Israel told us they're beginning now, are you in, etc. and we - knowing we'd be in shortly after regardless - said yes. So in that regard at least we're getting some candor from Rubio, perhaps. Should be spicy if that statement is true/in context.

That evenly spaced of stratotankers probably means they are escorting fighters/bombers.

Another way to look at it is: Israel just united the Middle East. The Miracle is they are united with Israel instead of against Israel.

They've been flying over Illinois/Indiana/Ohio all weekend. I don't think those long haul flights are sustainable for weeks on end. IMO Iran was really stupid when they started launching into other ME countries. Those tankers will likely stay over there and be used for refueling "coalition" aircraft.

Am I wrong?
ETA: honestly, how big of an a-hole do you have to be to have everyone in your region throw aside generations of hate and conflict to unite against you?
Islam is finished in Iran.

Islam isn't finished. They will just hopefully end the theocracy. The crown Prince said he wants Iran to become a true democracy and doesn't want to be a monarch.

Seems like a good summation from Mark Kelly
quote:
Takeaways from Hegseth’s press conference this morning: 1. There is no strategic goal. He said this isn’t about “regime change” despite the President saying otherwise, repeatedly. That means they can't explain how all of this makes Americans safer in the end. 2. He said “this will end on the President’s choosing,” and provided no real timeline. That reinforces that there is no plan and no strategic goal, just a 79 year old man who spends too much time in a ballroom in Florida deciding when to stop this. 3. Hegseth suggested the Commander-in-Chief is setting the operational tempo — which is really high right now, putting a lot of stress on our troops and systems. Donald Trump, despite what he may believe, doesn’t have the capacity to make these types of operational decisions that have real consequences for commanders and servicemembers. 4. And finally, going into a conflict of this scale with no strategy and a wishy-washy end state often leads to a less than optimal outcome, starting with the potential for continued escalation and a long, bloody conflict. Americans want leaders who focus on improving their lives, not starting more wars. It’s clear to me and everyone else who is paying attention that this President needs to be reined in, but that’s not going to come from this Secretary of Defense, who has tough sounding talking points but little else to offer the American people or our servicemembers.

That seems like a lot of wishcasting to me

Without the theocracy and the fear of being accused of "heresy" for not following Islamic law and dogma, we are going to see a huge population shift religion from Islam to Christianity, Judaism, and other religions.
The largest growing religion in Iran is Christianity. While considered a "protected" class, no one was allowed to convert from Islam by law without punishment. So Christian converts would have "house churches" where they would gather in secret in each other's homes to hold mass.

I think if given the chance to leave Islam and convert to another religion, then a huge chunk of the population is going to do just that.
I think they are going to be a secular nation.

Barely 48 hours in. When Dubai and the UAE keep getting hit for a week or two and life becomes unstable the public sentiment could begin to turn.

no... just... no
Islam will still be, by and large, the religion of an overwhelming majority of the nation....
much like Christianity in America, it's way too ingrained to where it's part of the fabric of the country.... the new version will much less oppressive, as it was ruled by those who perverted the religion to extreme versions that they weaponized for power, but make no mistake... there will not be, as you are thinking, "huge chunks" of the population converting to Christianity...
