Just over 72 years after she sank.

Led by a search team put together by billionaire Paul Allen, the ship was found resting at the bottom on the Philippine Sea.
“As Americans, we all owe a debt of gratitude to the crew for their courage, persistence and sacrifice in the face of horrendous circumstances. While our search for the rest of the wreckage will continue, I hope everyone connected to this historic ship will feel some measure of closure at this discovery so long in coming,” Allen said.
A Japanese submarine sunk the cruiser on July 30, 1945. The ship just completed a mission to the island of Tinian; they delivered components of the atomic bomb, “Little Boy” that helped end the war.
Around 800 of the ship’s 1,196 sailors and Marines survived the sinking, but after four to five days in the water, suffering exposure, dehydration, drowning, and shark attacks, only 316 survived.

Jesus. That's a week before the war ended.

when i see this stuff i just ask myself why???
there is no mystery as to what happened, so just leave the ship be so the resting place of so many brave souls can rest in peace.
now scavengers will start going out trying to make money from it somehow or try to turn it into some bizzare tourist attraction if they can find a way to make money off of it, they will

Everyone should recall the story of the Indianapolis from Quint in the movie Jaws.

Not diminishing from this great find.
I wonder if Paul has found some very lucrative wrecks, that don't get much fanfare.

Chances are, if it took them 72 years to find it, it's too deep for amateur diving.

The war ended because she delivered the bomb that ended it

They pulled plenty of shite from the Titanic wreck. You can check it out at the Luxor in Vegas

I've probably read over 200 books about WW2 in my lifetime. The single most harrowing book I have ever read was one on the USS Indianapolis.
God bless those men, all those lost souls and all those who suffered.

Exactly...no fricking around at that point.

Remember the book title?

I read somewhere the ship was not traveling in a zig zag pattern but was on a straight line at the time of the sinking.
