And there would be no place to blast; there would be backups everywhere and rebuilding would be simple. Most people cannot grasp what a true AI could do with all the networked items in the world and advances in technology. It's truly terrifying.

This is why I don't even worry about it. The day it happens, we're all fricked and fricked completely. There will be no war, no struggle. It will be over before we even knew it happened.

How is this a bad thing?

All of this has happened before, and will happen again.

Serious post:

This Luddite non-sense scares the hell out of me. It was cute whenever they wanted to teach creationism as science, it was even a little endearing when they decided not to vaccinate their kids, but slowing down technological progress out of fear is too far. I seriously hope this movement gets ignored and forgotten quickly.

It would be natural selection. As a business owner I see more degreed idiots who I must hire more people to babysit everyday. I'd hope I'm one of the ones the AI keeps around and sigh in relief

The idea of robotic AI overlords completely conquering humans is asinine. Always has been.

HOWEVER, having a select group of humans utilizing advanced robots and AI to oppress the masses is a realistic fear and, in fact, is already occurring.

My question in all of this is how can society sustain itself when AI takes over white collar and blue collar jobs when unemployment skyrockets to 20 - 30% and beyond? High taxes on businesses to support the skilled workers through welfare who are being pushed out of jobs for a machine?

There simply won't be that much work that needs to be done. With machines doing all of our work, we should have the unemployment rate as high as 95%, maybe higher. Having a job will be an oddity unless you're an artist of some type. In theory we could all pursue our own passions without having to worry about providing for ourselves. It actually sounds pretty nice.

Yes it is already well underway.

We have the highest labor non-participation rate in years. Underemployment is also extremely high (PhDs working at Starbucks). A huge part of it is institutuonalized due to tech advancements.

It's not as great as it sounds unless there is income redistribution. Sorry that's economics not politics. But hard choices will need to be made.

There's plenty of solutions, and most of them aren't as terrifying as Communism. But that's not my point. We do need to make some big decisions in the near future, but the fact that things will change and we will need to adapt is not reason enough to try and stifle progress.

Lots of people in here who really just aren't aware of the capabilities, but talking out their asses like experts anyway.

Read this first to get an idea of how an AI gets to what I like to call scary state.

Then read this to learn why we need to be concerned. Not scared shitless, but very concerned.

Don't do that. This is an interesting and important discussion, we don't need it to devolve into a dick-measuring contest about who's listened to the most TED talks on the subject or read the most Kurzweil books (by the way, I have).

Of course we're not aware of the possibilities, by the very nature of the discussion we can't be. When people first used fire, I'd be willing to bet that a lot of their peers were afraid of it and didn't use it. Those that were afraid of it died off and those that used it fricked and made more people who used fire. The same thing will happen here, some people will be frightened and not willing to adapt (Luddites) and the rest of us will become something new.

'You don't know what you don't know' is the key concept most people don't comprehend.

Both articles are fascinating reads.

For all the zombie craze in movies and TV lately and aliens in media and conspiracy theory and history channel, AI really is the only real threat to mankind. It's scary to think that machines may label us as obsolete once they reach a certain point of technology. And the real issue is how far can you push technology without it being too far? We all want to become more advanced, but it appears that may eventually be our downfall

Umm just turn the power off???
