Depends a ton on what your beat is.
Also, if you were retiring today at age 50, having never been promoted, with 25 years in, you'd be getting a pension of $5,337 a month for life, with 3% a year guaranteed raise.
And at that experience level, your salary is about $90k, from what I could find on their website.

There are over 10k officers in Chicago. Odds are you're safe

not a chance. in Mayberry maybe but, Chicago? $600k wouldn't be enough.

I have no idea how they are break up their areas, but it's not like the entirety of Chicago is under one PD. Would I work in the south side area where all the shootings happen? Of course not, but they probably get paid more. It could take you 2 hours to get from the south side of Chicago to the north side in only moderate traffic, that's a big area with plenty of places that are very safe.

Yeah but the thing about that is that the city is like $70 Billion in debt. Detroit police were promised pensions too but when the money runs out, the money runs out.

How is Chicago so cheap? The OT tells me 100k a year is just barely scraping by in south Louisiana. I would think Chicago is more expensive, at least the decent parts.

It seems about avg for cost of living.
Would I do it?
20 yrs ago, Yes!
In today's Chicago, No!

I wouldn't work as a police officer anywhere for 60k.

Can you live in Chicago on 60k a year?
Certainly, especially if you have a dual-income household.
You aren't going to be living in a nice place on the Gold Coast, but there are plenty of decent neighborhoods in which you can rent on that income and, if you go a little further out from the city center, perhaps even buy. Cops here have great benefits, too (and is not a small reason why this city is in such a dire financial position).
If I remember correctly, there are about 25 police districts in the city. I wouldn't want to be a cop in about 7 or 8 of them, especially at a salary like that, but being a cop in the rest of the city would be perfectly fine. You'd be dealing with drunken idiots in Lakeview or typical middle class property stuff out near O'Hare or problems with people speaking English in the Southwest part of the city or homeless in the Loop.
Hell no on that though if you're in Austin or Lawndale or Chicago Lawn or Englewood or somewhere like that, though.

Maybe. Just as long as I don't have to work the south side

That is true, without a doubt.

Easily. River North, Loop, West Loop, River West, and Gold Coast would make things difficult, but you can easily live in Chicago with a $60K salary. There are pockets of Old Town, Lincoln Park and South Loop that it would not work, but you are not living very bad with a $60K salary in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Wicker Park, Bucktown, West Town, Logan Square, etc., etc.
