I did leave for less pay and it was a great move bc the previous workplace was soul-crushing. But first I took a long look at my bills and figured out how to cut expenses.

It was worth the pay cut. After 5 years at the new place, a better job at another employer came along with more pay than I was making at the miserable place.

That all sounds better so it makes it a definite consideration.

however I’d have to take about a 10% pay cut

If the long term prospect look like they could move quickly, it may be this will be remedied quickly with upward mobility and the better work/life balance may actually account for the difference. If you're spending 15% less time at work but getting paid 10% less, maybe that would work for you

Ultimately, will a 10% cut significantly impact your lifestyle in a way you are not willing to tolerate? That is the question you have to ask yourself, because you sure make it sound like everything else points to the potential job being the better one. And only you and your family can adequately answer that.

I would. The 10% today might pale in comparison to the future opportunities/long term career implications you mentioned.

What do you think it does to lifetime earnings?

I took about 10% pay cut 4 years ago.
Better opportunities longer term at new company.
Within a year I was making 10% more. I'm now making 30% more than was at old company.
Best decision I ever made.
As some posters have said, sometimes you gotta bet on yourself.

Absolutely. I've reached a point in my life and career that I'm no longer all that interested in attaining a higher position. Being able to go to my kids' events, take more vacations, leave work at the office when I leave, etc., are much more appealing to me these days.

Just having a better work/life balance is worth 10% in my opinion. Plus, you can work your way up to the same and/or better pay with a less stressful environment.

Yep. I did that nearly 30 years ago. If things go to plan I'll be retiring from that better company in another 3 years or so. No Ragrets at all!

I'd take a 10 percent paycut gladly and downsize my boat. I'd have more days to fish. Hell you could drive an Uber one day a week just to get out the house and make beer money.

No, I'd take a raise to work for a lesser company than where I am.

Nah. I've done it multiple times, just never works out they way you think it will. I'm at a point where I'm not taking a cut.

Been there and done that. New job wasn’t as great as it looked. I then had to work extra later on to make up for lost salary.

Absolutely. If 10% isnt going to affect your day to day, I wouldnt even think twice.
