I do, I'm on vacation. I take Christmas, Mardi gras and Fourth of July weeks off to travel every year.
L.A. not LA.
I didn't leave $0, I left $1.50. I started a countdown from 20% when I asked for the bill the second time. I know it was a half hour because we finished and "Blackish" came on TV, it was finished before we got our meal. The police officers had to wait a long time for their drinks too and looked annoyed.
(one thing I noted is LAPD seems friendlier and more approachable than police back home)
Elena's Greek and Armenian; Glendale.
My bad. Thought this would be a 3-4 reply thread late at night.
Tipping is an odd thing. I am the guy that usually tips even for to-go (5-10%) and counter ($1-3) so I felt bad about not tipping. Though seeing as it's a family place and obviously all 'employees' are family the tip wasn't as important as it would be to someone making $2.13 an hour.
Just that it's one of my must go to places in L.A. Thats okay, Juanita's on Olivera will take that spot.
Got a FatBurger the other night based on a FDB board recommendation. Good, but wouldn't be a top ten burger in NOLA (IMO).

Nah I wouldn't feel bad about that. The server wasn't doing their job. I'll cut them a little slack if they are slammed.

You said it’s a family owned joint and you usually enjoy it. Maybe there was a death or crisis in their family causing the crew to not function well.

They definitely didn’t deserve your tip that night, but no need to smear them online yet - nothing wrong with giving the owner a call the next day and letting them know about your experience.

would you stiff a server that gave you bad service, yet good food?
Absolutely.
Service is part of the meal experience. That server has nothing to do with the quality of the food.

A lot of good replies that I'm on board with but I think this one sums it up the best.

I would ask to see the chef, compliment them and tip them on the spot, and then not leave shite for the poor service. Meritocracy in action.

You're a more patient man than I am if you barged into the kitchen for your ticket after a 30 minute wait and multiple requests for the bill. I'd have guestimated the bill and thrown some cash on the table, regardless of whether it was short or over.
Enough is enough.

It's $40.25. I leave $42 on the table and leave. I feel sort of bad about it, seeing that I long ago served people. Yet it wasn't busy and there were no odd requests or issues.
Just downright horrible service.
I waited tables at places ranging from "just don't come in naked" to strict dress codes when I was in college, due to that experience there's no way on God's green earth I would have left anything for that server other than my reasoning for not tipping them. For truly crappy service I've been known to yelp/google-review/etc.

Server isn't part of the good food. They are there to serve it. Cooks make the food good. So you tip based on their service.

I will write a tip of a penny to send a message that I'm not a guy who just doesn't tip, you just sucked.
Being a waiter/ess shouldn't be hard. If you can get an order right and keep drinks refilled you're golden. I can understand the kitchen is slow sometimes.

quote:Yeah but they actually rounded down. It also isn't about the amount of money but the principle of the whole thing. If you charge me a certain amount and I give you cash, I expect you to give me back the proper change. If I paid with a debit/credit, would you have charged me more to make the total to a round number? If not, then don't do that bullshite when I pay with cash. So hopefully the sorry server enjoyed her chump change.
I used to do this. So if the person was supposed to get back $8.31, I’d just give back $9. I hated keeping loose coins in my pockets for change.

I don’t know why people can’t understand this. Food quality is the kitchen, service is the waiter.

Why not just raise the price of the food items and wages of the waiter/waitresses? The better the wait staff, the higher his/her wage.
So pay more for shitty service?

If the service is that bad I don’t leave anything. If the service is good, I usually tip more than I should.
