Most of us wouldn't know until we were in that position. Easy to say now, but instincts kick in and subconscious crap pulls at you. If that bond is strong, you might not even think, just react.

I've been in minor situations where I have put myself in danger to prevent my dog from being harmed. It was instinctual and I had no time to survey the odds of myself being injured.
So I'd say in the moment, I believe 100% I would.

Depends on the level of “risk”. Yes for a reasonable risk, probably not for a suicidal risk.
It is interesting how lawyers instinctively approach most every situation like a lawyer. "Risk" is not an actual description of a situation nor can it be turned into a percentage. For almost everyone, there is an acceptable amount of risk to attempt saving a pet and there is also an unacceptable risk to attempt to save a pet. The answer for almost everyone is "it depends".

My last dog, absolutely. This one, maybe.

If she (springer spaniel) is swept away in the current and about to go over Niagara Falls, no.
If we are duck hunting and an unexpected alligator decides to come after her, then hell yes I'm jumping in and fighting.

We talking like defending it from a grizzly bear?
Yes. Situations like that are why you have kids. That way you have something to toss in front of the bear while you and the dog get away.

I have two that would die trying and if it was my wife they would die trying, reanimate and tear the liver out of the attacker as werewolves. Now our third dog would make friends with them and assume they were their new owner.
