You forgot about the sharks
Well, that's another nice thing about Cape Town. It doesn't have the bull sharks, tigers and reef sharks, etc., as are found in the Kwa Zulu Natal (Durban) area. Such as in your photo.

The Cape has only one - the Great White. Ok, that's a bad boy no doubt, but - unlike the smaller, more numerous and more aggressive warmer water sharks - it can be avoided. The rule in this part of the world is: avoid seals and you will avoid Great Whites.

There are some great surfing beaches in the Cape that stay deserted as they are too close to seal colonies. And yes, even at a 'safe' beach you always have to stay frosty. I mean think about it... black wetsuit, paddling on top of the water... so yeah, no matter where you are you always keep an eye on the outside rip. He's out there.

I met a driller that worked in SA for a year, and he said that place was not safe. I'll take the Japs, and their modern society.

I live just east of Pretoria. This one of the countries that just about has it all when it comes to out door activities to the night life. Beautiful coutry with a diverse population. Yes crime is an issue in alot of places, but you learn where and what not to do. And the women of many ethinic groups are smoking hot and like to frick. One big problem the people have is they tend to look at Americans through hollywood glasses, meaning they portray america by what they see on TV and that all americans are rich.

Still I would like to check Japan out. See if the hootch is slanty like the eyes.

Japan, and it's not even close. I'm browsing the OT from the 50 stories above Tokyo right now and thinking hard about living here long-term. Not a Japanophile or weaboo or whatever -- I had many layovers at Narita before actually visiting and never really felt a desire to visit, but I ended up spending most of the last year here and love it. An awesome city with just about everything. Good bars, some of the best cuisine and restaurants in the world, really comfortable and convenient living, and nice people. And when I want to get outta the city, I'm a couple of hours from drifting dry flies on trout stream or spirited driving through the mountains, or whatever.

As for xenophobia: I'm white, so not really in a position to say if it's overstated, but I saw plenty of it when I lived in Singapore, and see much less of it here -- despite the reputation. I know South Americans, Middle Easterners, and South Asians who are established here long term who love Japan and really positive about their social and professional networks. Some have said it's less a daily factor than Japan's reputation's would suggest.

Edit: n/m

Had a neighbor that was South African. Cost of living there is much lower than Japan.

Yeah. I think they are still in the 1950's regarding race relations, if you know what I mean. Labor is almost free.

I do. My understanding from him was that real estate was cheap but you basically needed to build a compound.
