re: Most expensive speeding ticket you've had or seen?
Posted by etan on 3/4/15 at 4:29 pm to Ghostfacedistiller
I know someone who got a ticket for over $4000 and lost his license (road racing in Japan). In some countries, fines are proportional to your income so people get hit with tickets in the hundreds of thousands: https://www.gizmag.com/the-worlds-most-expensive-speeding-fine/14981/
Edit: Permanent confiscation laws make for expensive tickets as well... that probably makes the confiscated Veyron owner the winner for most expensive ticket.

re: Anyone on the OT ever know or come across a member of organized crime?
Posted by etan on 1/26/15 at 7:06 am to Howyouluhdat
Since I've been in Japan I've met a couple of guys in a Tokyo syndicate of the Yakuza. Nice guys, pretty low key about their, uh, organizational affiliations, but they seem like people I wouldn't want to cross. Mostly it's the shadowy reputation of the Yakuza that makes them seem so powerful...
But I see gangsters out on the town almost every weekend, because the area I'm in is full of Yakuza-run clubs. You can tell them by full body tattoos, (sometimes) missing fingers, shaved heads, and the number plates on their Rolls or Bentleys.
And the other day I met the gangster Lamborghini guy in Tokyo, Morohoshi. Super nice guy... I got a picture with him and one of his Lamborghinis. He and his crew are known from this video:

I am going to assume that Hertz doesn't mean a rental
My neighbor rebuilt a 65 fastback from nothing, and he put the hertz decal on his. I asked him about it, and he was talking about the reason it was on there, but I have forgotten what it was.
Because Hertz had a thousand Fastbacks in their rental fleet: Details...

In September of 1965 Shelby American General Manager Peyton Cramer struck up a deal with Hertz to offer the 1966 GT350H Mustang as a rental car.... As Ford puts it, “The idea was to put high-performance, special-edition Shelby Mustang coupes into the hands of racing enthusiast-minded rental customers.” That’s right, if you were a Hertz Sports Car Club member back in 1966 (and 25 years of age), you could drive off the rental car lot in a performance 306 hp Mustang fastback. Total cost: $17 a day and 17 cents a mile.

They have good trout fishing? I bet the cost of living sucks, though.
Cost of living does suck, though I'm getting a break right now because of the currency advantage -- USD is at a 7-year high against the yen.
I dunno if Japan is on anyone's radar as far as an international destination for trout fishing, but fly fishing is common here -- everything from Giant Trevally offshore to really small stuff on tenkara and tiny dry flies. I fished for cherry trout, stocked browns, and native char in the rivers with some success this summer.

Japan, and it's not even close. I'm browsing the OT from the 50 stories above Tokyo right now and thinking hard about living here long-term. Not a Japanophile or weaboo or whatever -- I had many layovers at Narita before actually visiting and never really felt a desire to visit, but I ended up spending most of the last year here and love it. An awesome city with just about everything. Good bars, some of the best cuisine and restaurants in the world, really comfortable and convenient living, and nice people. And when I want to get outta the city, I'm a couple of hours from drifting dry flies on trout stream or spirited driving through the mountains, or whatever.
As for xenophobia: I'm white, so not really in a position to say if it's overstated, but I saw plenty of it when I lived in Singapore, and see much less of it here -- despite the reputation. I know South Americans, Middle Easterners, and South Asians who are established here long term who love Japan and really positive about their social and professional networks. Some have said it's less a daily factor than Japan's reputation's would suggest.
Edit: n/m

re: Time to swap out the wheels again on the Tacoma

I love my Tundra's stock split fives, but the finish is flaking badly... I'm mounting my next set of tires on Stealth Custom Series' F5s... which look really good on Tacomas. SCS isn't the cheapest (F5s are $145 per), but they have some classic designs.

Funny to log onto the OT and see this topic. I got pulled over by a motorcycle cop today on a toll road in Japan for *not* treating a yield sign like a stop sign - first time getting pulled over here.
Apparently I was supposed to come to a complete stop, not just check that no traffic was coming. I don't speak any Japanese and I think that's part of why I was let off. He used hand motions to explain that I was supposed to stop all the way, and I was like "Oh, hai, hai, hai, sumimasen! (yes, yes, yes, sorry)" He checked my paperwork and then used Google translate on my phone to say: "I'm going to go now."

Damn. That's the Focke Wulf. Very rare warbird that is being refurbished at BTR.
Yep, that's PAI Aero's very expensive Focke Wulf. I feel for them, it takes some guts to operate a plane like that: LINK
I thought so too, until I hitched a ride in this car. I don't get the extreme "stancefail" cars that are built to park, but I watched this thing do a lap around Tsukuba circuit about 4 seconds quicker than a 458 Italia.

I love these "my pickup" posters. It's cool if you're not a gearhead or not into cars, but they sure make a stubborn effort to refuse to get the point of threads like this one. I have an '03 Tundra 4x4 that I plan to never get rid of because it's awesome, but I enjoy it for things other than driving pleasure.
I've got an old Carrera 2 and I rarely find a road where I think, "this would be so much better in my 4000 lb, 245hp pickup."

Nope. I get stance, and I get rat rods, but this one doesn't have me feelin' some type of way.

This particular Gulf-livery GT40
Edit: Although, yesterday I drove a 1989 Carrera Speedster and really fell in love with it despite never really being wild about the styling, so it's my new realistic dream-car-du-jour.

That is fairly baller, but I might still prefer this one in Golden Meadow. Just perfect:

Yep. She and Christina Ricci and Margot Robbi were reason enough to watch several episodes of Pan Am.

re: What vehicle made in the last 30 years do you think qualify as a collectable?
Posted by etan on 8/31/14 at 5:50 am to Tiger in Texas
I've been seeing this one driving around central Tokyo. It's absolutely massive in person... as long as they don't produce very many -- and I don't see how they could find many buyers -- it will begin to appreciate soon. Portal axles from a military truck, 5 diffs, 9000 pounds.

You'll see Skylines soon. 25 year old EPA/DOT exemption hits the first BNR-32 Skyline GT-Rs starting last month... '89 year models are becoming legal. I test drove one today (at Yokota Air Base in Japan). Bringing one or two back with me to the Louisiana as soon as I can find decent examples.
