They've even adapted during the pandemic by using an old drive-in theater to stage their shows.
For those that may not know, they got their start during the Great Depression. A guy from there talked a group of starving Broadway performers to move there and perform. It’s called the Barter Theater because people would bring food and barter for tickets. Even when I lived there we bartered with them for advertising, etc.
From wiki “ Many well-known stars of stage, screen and television have performed early in their careers at Barter, including Gregory Peck, Ernest Borgnine, Patricia Neal, Ned Beatty, Hume Cronyn, Gary Collins, Frances Fisher, Kevin Spacey, Larry Linville, John Glover, Jim Varney, and Wayne Knight. Will Bigham, the 2007 winner of On The Lot, acted at Barter Theatre for several years.”
The Virginia Creeper bike trail is a great family trip if you go up to visit.

Not a real tech guy but I pay $40 a month for fiber 100mb Cent link. It seems better than what I was getting in GA

This verse has always bothered me.
Cumberland Gap is west of JC so he'd have to go east to JC.

JC used to be the gay capital of TN and leans slightly left. I never found anything appealing about it.
Sorry that it doesn’t appeal to you now that it is no longer the gay capital of Tennessee, as it had been in the past.
I’m guessing you also like shitty new country music artists over Steve Earle, since he is a liberal.

Steve Spurrier is from Johnson City.

North/South running but labeled as East/West Interstate 26 which pisses me off goes through Johnson City.

I'm up in Johnson City Tennessee
Looking for the wind in me
Lord fly me over Pontchartrain
Back to the land of sugarcane
And summer rain

I love Roan Mountain. I spent a week in Hampton Creek Cove last fall. It was great. Pure silence for the most part except for the wildlife.

East Tennessee is nice. Beautiful area within a comfortable distance to many great western NC towns. Boone, Blowing Rock, Banner Elk, Asheville, Waynesville, etc.. But if you are remote, you can settle in any of those locations. Just pick the one you like the best.

I would much rather be in JC than Knox.
We are closer to Knoxville than Johnson City.
Both are at the intersection of major interstates but JC wins for having a much better designed, newer interstate through the Smokies. I-26 to Ashville is magnificent.
Knoxville wins in having an airport with more flights.
Neither has Amtrac, nor does anywhere near. Closest is Spartanburg SC.
Knoxville wins on weather, IMO, because Knoxville and points south south west are warmer. Watch the weather this week. The snow happens in Johnson City and Kingsport and Bristol a lot more and a lot more accumulation than in Knoxville. Elevation matters.
People enjoy hunting, fishing, boating, and family, not necessarily in that order.
I remember I had a flat tire in a rainstorm, and total strangers (who worked for a tree trimming company) stopped and changed the tire for me, and then (when I asked) delivered several loads of shredded trees to an area that I planned to make a garden several years in the future.
I'll take my hillbilly neighbors any time. Heck, I haven't even been robbed at gunpoint since we moved up here and our house hasn't been burgled, nor any cars stolen. Which I can't say for my time in Houston or New Orleans.
