My wife and I may be in a position to be 100% remote for work, and we have talked about moving to Tennessee, Georgia, or Florida to be closer to family (have family in all 3). The natural beauty of our surroundings is pretty important to us, and we've enjoyed vacationing in Tennessee a couple of times, so it's pretty high on the list.

Neither of us have ever been, but a family friend of ours says that Johnson City a hidden gem and one of his favorite places in Tennessee. He says it's beautiful, the people are great, and the cost of living is extremely low. I've done some preliminary research, and he certainly appears to be correct about the CoL. So, what's the catch? It it just because it's 2-3 hours from any major city? I'd appreciate your thoughts.

Isn’t there a song about Johnson City?

If so then sure.

I've been there. Its pretty cool. You're surrounded by the Great Smokey mountains and Knoxville isn't too far away. Might be more touristy now though. I was there a long time ago.

I know Bristol, Va which is part of the tri-Cities.

Beautiful part of the country in the Appalachian foothills. The weather is awesome as well, four true seasons.

However, fairly impoverished and meth and opiates are a massive problem. You are more than likely fine, but I would be concerned wi5 resale values of your home, schools for your kids, if any, and social scene for you and your wife.

I’m sure you can make it a great situation for your family, but be aware that there are reasons why cost of living is so low.

I’ve been there and I really don’t understand how he’d call it a “hidden gem”. Kinda sucked honestly, as did that entire part of Tennessee leading up to West Virginia. I’d imagine that East Tennessee as a whole would have to be very appealing to you to enjoy it, I found it very monotonous and depressing though

Good God, no. Surroundings, sure. JC itself? That family friend has some explaining to do.

That's literally the whole complete opposite side of the state from us. I'd move there in a minute. I'd rather move to Gatlinburg or thereabouts, but yeah... I'd move there.

After checking your post history you are welcome in JC. The Boones creek area is the newer nicer area. The Gump addition (not a typo) is the old money homes area. Public schools here are better than the private schools I went to in LA.
I can answer anything else you want to know

ETA I’ve lived in LA, SC, NC, GA, FL and East TN is better by almost any metric

Like I said, we've never been there. Of course we're not moving anywhere without visiting and doing extensive research, but I'm trying to find out if it's worth checking out. I'm sure there are parts of East Tennessee that are depressing, but I can't imagine how anyone could say that about the entire region.
