I don't get this thinking that if another man follows his government's ill conceived orders into his grave then I should do the same or else lose my self respect.
The old folks used to have a saying about this....." So if Johnny jumps off a bridge you are going to jump off the bridge too?
The war was a mistake. Every life that was lost because of it compounded the mistake.
It takes courage, not cowardice, to take a stand against your government when it is mistaken.

My dad was in ROTC at LSU at the time and asked the army to send him to Vietnam. He wanted to go fight. He was a second lieutenant when he got there and a captain when he left. Not one man died under his command - true story.

Knowing what I now know, hell no. Not going to frick my life up for that bullshite.
A justified war where we are truly threatened? Sure. But not that BS.

Oh don't take that high minded bullshite road. The government was right to go into Vietnam and deal with them. They weren't right in the way they dealt with it for the most part and the way we got out. Much like the Iraqi and Afghanny wars, if we wanted to, we could've completely destroyed them. But no, pussy fricking liberals were so concerned that "oh gosh! People might actually get hurt or die in a war" that they wouldn't allow it.
When your country calls on you to do a service, you fricking do it.

They had a draft. And unless you were some pussy arse phaggit, you did your duty. No telling what the millenial bitches would do nowadays with a draft. Probably all run off .
Depends on the war.

Here's a new flash for you.: The US government makes a mistake from time to time. The Vietnam War was one of them. To blindly follow every order without question is doing a disservice to your country and fellow citizen.

No, the mistake wasn't going over there to fight. The mistake was how the politicians handled the war. Not allowing us to go north and completely destroy them is one of the biggest political/military frick ups in this country's history.
We were trying to stop communism from taking over yet another country. Look at how much better off South Korea is compared to North Korea because we intervened. That could've been South Vietnam.

Nah, not for fighting a pointless war

This is greatly overexaggerated. The vast, vast majority of guys that came back were fully functional, contributing members of society...far, far better men than the protesting pothead zeros that never went. Don't let Hollywood's Rambo-style movies influence you.
Thank you! If you listened to Hollywood or popular culture every single soldier and Marine that stepped foot in South Vietnam came back a shell-shocked drug addict or spouse abuser.

According to the 1971 Draft, my birthday would have made me #15, so probably.
Weren't you able to join voluntarily and choose your branch of service even if you were drafted?

The mistake was going over there to fight in the first place. History has proven this.

When the numbers are in the millions, the circumstances of vast majorities don't negate the issues facing minorities.
I have spent enough time in VA and DoD hospitals to know that 'Nam took a serious toll on America. I can't imagine how fricked up the guys that carpet bombed Laos for a decade following our withdrawal from 'Nam became. I wonder if any of them realize that all those bombs they dropped are still detonating and killing Laosians today.

first off, thank you to all the guys here that served our country in ANY war
second,
well, i am thankful for the Vietnam War, because without it my wife's parents, who helped the US during the war, wouldn't have ever come over here, then subsequently produced her.... she wouldn't have been in my college classes, and as such my life wouldn't be the same today... i wouldn't have the same two beautiful, awesome children i have either...

Yes, and anyone who would dodge a draft isn't worth sharing air with me.

How much do you want to bet the people downvoting this consider themselves small government conservatives
