Since most modern SUVs are basically minivans (and drives like a minivan) and not everyone needs a pickup truck bed.....an alternative for educated, dignified soccer dads out there could be a four wheel drive station wagon. The 4 Birkenstock-mobiles below all offer a lifted suspension, robust traction control, good fuel economy, and good ride/handling. All but the Volvo are rated to tow a small trailer - up to 3500 lbs. All have excellent safety ratings and can safely transport a family of 4. All of them will turn the heads of athletic-looking women at your local organic foods store.

In addition - granola wagons like these are a great way to keep your NRA support and right leaning political tendencies under the radar. That's a good thing in an age where highly intolerant progressive marxists are burning down American cities and trying to "cancel" everyone they don't like.

Which one would you drive?

2020 Subaru Outback - The best selling station wagon in the country - and with more ground clearance than most pickup trucks.

2020 Buick TourX - The largest, the quietest, and actually made in Germany:

2020 Volvo V60 Cross Country - Possibly the best looking:

Audi A4 Allroad - The nicest interior and best handling:

I used to drive an Outback. It was a POS. Will never own another Subaru, though it was a pretty fun car to drive when it wasn't having problems.

No interest in the R&M costs on an Audi or Volvo.

Buick? I'm not in my 60's yet.

Doesn't Acura still make one?

I get the Subaru and it's selling point, but I have a Jeep that I don't wheel as hard as those promo pictures.

Who does the Subaru appeal to that actually do that type of activity?

Will the Audi's Air Conditioner keep the interior under 80F?

Forewarned is forearmed.

We have a 2020 Outback and really like it. Rides and drives great.

The big screen just sticking out of the dash in the Audi is a no go for me.

Why can't they integrate the screen into the dash. Looks much better.

All very nice rides.

I may have to look into that Volvo wagon when I'm ready to buy again.

If you live in a place with a lot of bad winter weather, they're extremely useful, even if you aren't taking them offroad. Go to a ski town out west and count the number of Subarus you see on the road.

Volvo or Audi. The Outback has always seems like a good option. Interesting to hear if the problems Spleen mentioned are widespread as I’ve always heard they were great cars. If you can get past the whole “wagon” thing, there’s no doubt these are the most practical vehicles on the road.

Funny OP mentioned keeping your political leanings under the radar. At a place I used to work, there was a string of car break-ins in the parking lot one day. All the vehicles broken into? Trucks. The thieves were looking for (and found a few) guns.

The Outback is a sturdy car. Ours has been mostly trouble free except for burning some oil. The interior is kind of cheap, but the new 2020 model is much nicer. It's hard to rule out the Outback, as it can handle pretty much everything that the average Ford F-150 driver actually does with their vehicle. It's immensely practical and very well priced.

I particularly like the larger Volvo (V90) station wagon. The V60 is too small. The V90 looks much better and offers a lot more space.

The Buick TourX is a very attractive looking vehicle as well. It's a very good price - slightly more than the Outback, but less expensive than the Volvo.

Have you read "Millionaire Next Door"? They buy Buicks, usually pay cash, and frequently replace them with another Buick from the same dealership.

The Buick is the best looking of the bunch.

No desire to own any of them.
