Yes. In that market, the LX is not doing as well as it should. Cars like the Range Rover, Escalade, Denali, and Navigator are completely out classing it.

As they should. The LX is a dinosaur vs the competition. Toyota hasn’t figured out that the LX buyer is very different than the LC buyer either. A new LC buyer isn’t cross shopping a Range Rover and doesn’t see the LX as a better/upgraded version of the LC.
Cadillac and GMC dealers around here seemed to have a hell of a waiting list for the new Escalades and Denali. They seem to be everywhere now. I rarely see 200-series LXs.
The 200 series LX front end change in 2012 was the start of the decline, which was cemented in the 2016 change. I've got an 18 year old 100 series that is bulletproof...if I had to go to an LX, I would balk at anything past the 2011. They just got so damn ugly.

100% this, the TRD Pros always end up being $10-15k more than the TRD Off Road and about the only difference is wheels/tires, a different grill(ebay sells a knock off for $130), skid plates, a specialty color and the front is lifted a little. For the difference in price you could do a pretty bitchin suspension setup on a TRD OR and still be cheaper.
The one thing that Toyota does that pisses me off to no end is they ONLY offer the specialty colors on the 4Runner in the TRD Pro line, yet in the Tacoma and Tundra you can get the specialty colors in the lowly SR5 spec. That's bullshite. I'd kill for a TRD Off Road 4Runner in cement or voodoo blue but no way I'm paying the markup for a TRD Pro just for a color.

You’d be fricking crazy to trail that thing unless you paid cash. Off-road = Dirt-road...let’s be honest.

I'm on my 4th runner. Thought I would be getting TRD Pro this go around but opted out because I couldn't justify the price.
Instead, got another SR5 4x4 with a 2 inch suspension lift and the aftermarket wheels/tires. Looks extremely similar. Black paint with blue metallic sheen in it. Was slightly used by a car dealership owner's kid. I love it because I'm taller and the suspension allows me to slide right in. there's no climbing up or bending down to get in.
I removed the running boards and got a grill guard. Next upgrades:
-removing third row seat (its useless) to add cargo space.
-side canopy tent for camping/festivals
-some type of nerf bar setup for my wife. she struggles getting up in it

All of this...
The ‘16 LC and LX facelifts went in the opposite direction. However a little trimming and some black or body color wrap goes a long way to making the front end of the LX look much better. Same for the newer GX.

I don’t trust hybrid yet. The batteries go bad after the two year warranty and they are expensive to replace with a new one. Refurbished ones are cheaper but who would want a refurbished battery that will go out in two years anyway?
I’m enjoying the Highlander. Very luxurious drive

If Toyota would update the tech in them they would sell twice as many. Dont understand how Ford can be lightyears ahead. The hardest part is getting the car to be reliable, which Toyota has mastered. They have just completely ignored the tech though and it shows in the 4Runner

My next vehicle is going to be one. My truck ill hold for probably two more years unless the engine or transmission goes. I'll buy a year off used with 30-50k miles if possible. Its what we did for the girls car and my Moms car I helped her finance.

There are people like me that don't want all that tech built in. Buy a Honda "truck" if you want to be a fancy boy. :-)

You don't trust Toyota hybrid tech in 2021?

It is possible to have both.

Honda and Toyota test tech in the actual market and use “addition by subtraction” methods. It’s simple tech that is useful.
Look at all of the new Honda’s and Toyota’s and they mostly have digital clocks and dash rather than everything on one big screen. The tech is advanced, but simple at the same time. And it works and won’t break.
With the 4Runner (one of the last ones made entirely in Japan) the tech is just enough to serve the vehicle’s purpose. Nothing more. Why add it?
They just got CarPlay because they felt some people can’t live without it. I can’t.

Entune is quite possibly the most garbage user interface in all of auto manufacturing. Not intuitive, not easy to use, slow.
The excuses Toyota cultists use to justify their lack of basic functioning by modern standards are adorable though. And I love Toyotas and have owned several.

They updated it significantly in 2020. It went from being "worst in class" to merely average/acceptable.

Well that's good to hear, my most recent experience is in a 2018 model.

The first generation of all UI's were absolute crap (BMW iDrive, Cadillac CUE, Ford Sync, Toyota EnTune etc.). For some reason, Toyota and Honda haven't really evolved as quickly as their competitors since then. Simply put, the American's do automotive UI better than anyone right now.
Even the Europeans have come a long way very rapidly. Volvo went from one of the worst in the industry to one of the best in just a few years. BMW and Audi have done well after completely bombing their earlier systems.
Toyota/Lexus and Acura/Honda are still trying to find their way in that respect. They've improved, but they are still not competitive relative to other mainstream manufacturers.

Nothing about Lexus's new styling language works on most of their cars. The LC looks good, but everything else is just weird. The LX in particular looks awkward with that giant spindle grill.

Just bought a 2021 TRD Off Road Premium this week. I had been browsing for a 4Runner for the past month and the pickings were slim. I originally wanted a used one but if you could find one that was relatively recent and low miles, the cost was almost as much as a new one. Besides that they're flying out the door as soon as they're listed.
I live in western PA and I looked at dealerships from Pittsburgh to DC and many didn't have any in stock. I found this one last Saturday and it was the only one at our local dealership and it was pretty much take it or leave it when it came to negotiating price and trade in (2015 F150). New ones are being bought online before they even hit the lots, it's crazy.
So far I love it, drives great on some the mountain roads around our house and it will be much better in the snow next winter. I figure it will last long enough that I can hand it off to my son when he turns 16 in a decade too. I've seen on this board and many others that people don't like the limited tech, but that doesn't really bother me. As long as it has radio and gps, I'm cool. I will say though, it is mind boggling that they don't have auto headlights and a push button rear hatch.

Absolutely. That’s a great SUV.
I had my Tacoma in the mud yesterday while I was doing some fishing. That truck is built for being used like that. So it that 4Runner.
