A lot of things you pay cash for will get you on somebody's radar screen, though. You pay cash for an expensive item, the seller makes a bank deposit, a CTR gets filed, and suddenly the IRS is aware of you.

My mother, may she rest in peace, used to keep cash in her freezer ala the NO congressman and called it her frozen assets. Her children knew about it and we used it to buy her headstone.

I keep two amounts of reliable foreign currencies. They are in a few ziplocs with humidity pellets, in a pelican case, in a large vacuum bag with charcoal, in a duffel bag with a few license plates I have collected over the years. As for where these bags are, nope.

i want to commend this entire thread for not once using the term "safety deposit box." i am amazed at the people i've seen getting this wrong.

This. Knew of a guy who had $50,000 hidden in his house, told a loyal employee buddy.... Him and his son were kidnapped by fake police, taken to a dirt road; the boy was shot twice and died and the man lived with his throat cut.

yea, not sure they will save that much.
We have had our house robbed before. Im not sure there is really a safe place in your home that thieves wont find. Those bastards are good at their job

I use this monster - 54" high doors, six inches of steel plus once inside the big door, have another locked 1/2 inch steel door. Unfortunately, there is no money and nothing particularly valuable from a money standpoint inside. It is a damn cool safe though.

The trouble with safes is that criminals think something valuable is inside and you knowing what is inside is not worth your life. So you will open it.
Older couple in our community had a dishwasher installed. One of the installers got a peak of a gun safe. 3 weeks later they did a home invasion and beat the older couple until they opened the safe. Almost beat them to death.

Just buy a safe and keep it at your house. If it is 15k a year you can get a pretty nice fire proof safe and bolt it down to the slab.
