it’s pretty damn hard to feel like you’re decision boils down to not helping him reach his potential by using drugs, or make him use drugs.
That is hard, but if he needs the drugs, his potential is probably not in a traditional classroom. That’s not a put down- maybe tangible skills are his thing and he should just be tutored enough to work towards a GED.

From reading the comments it looks like a lot of people have very different situations. Evaluate and make your own decisions, don't let other people's situations dictate what you ultimately decide.
My son is in 5th grade and has been on some form of medication since 2nd grade. He has severe ADD and is essentially non-functional in academic settings without medicine. We held out putting him on medication for 2 years then finally broke down after everything else failed.
He is on a low dose of Adzenzys that he only takes on school days. His grades aren't good, but we recognize the danger of these types of drugs and are trying to get him to a level where he is able to simply focus enough to complete most of his work. That's it.
I used to always be against medication too. I think a lot of parents see them as a cure-all, which they are NOT intended to be. Combined with other therapies, tools, etc, it can be a great help for your kid.

We made the tough decision some time ago to put my kid on it for schooling only. he was failing bad and you could tell he was all over the map. he is now on it only for school and said he doesn't want it anymore outside of that. We have been working to ween him off of it for a while, hate that he is on it but he was clearly going to flunk. He is now in honors... hope we can get him off of it completely within a couple years.

I’ve never taken it why would I let my kid do it... would try therapy for my kid

Absolutely. Then I could self medicate.

I notice quite a few people saying they only give it in school days. Two questions: So I assume it’s not like an SSRI that has to build up in your system for it to be effective? Two, one of the “educators” told us not to do that bc they say something like 60% of learning occurs outside the classroom. I balked on that especially being how that would seem to me the best time to learn to cope with a learning disability without using meds.

I’m not an expert here but I do teach middle schoolers so i have some insight.
There are some kids that really benefit socially and academically from these meds. These kids are the ones who literally cannot focus, like they get up and run across the room looking at something and don’t even realize they are doing it toke of stuff. Kids like that tend to get ostracized in middle school so those meds can help them alot.
There are more kids that are on them just because they are active excitable kids who don’t want to focus, and I think it hurts those kids.
Figure out which one your kid is

No way in hell. For all you young bucks out there, that crap is horrible, yes horrible for your heart. You are young now and don't feel it but later in in life it will affect you. It's a bad drug when taken correctly and a horrible drug when it's misused.

Used to put them under my tongue and spit them out in the morning. shite sucks. And if one doesn’t “work” the doc is gonna push a different brand in your arse

They didn't work because you spit them out, dumbfrick.
Posted on 11/2/20 at 5:53 pm to Evolved Simian
I started taking them at 9 you “dumb frick.” 60 mg (max allowable by law) and 200 mg of Zoloft. I started spitting them out in high school and trading them with my crackhead neighbor for beer. If you support drugging up your kids, you’re the dumb frick.

No I wouldn’t.
I see patients in behavioral health hospitals who started with these meds as children and eventually became amphetamine abusers who have drug induced psychosis. I know not all will end up that way, but too many do.

great thread because I am starting to wonder about my 4 year old. He doesnt sleep. I think he has insomnia. I think this causes other issues like lack of concentration, etc etc... He can jus act so strange at times and I just feel like its because he doesnt sleep well and long enough. Reading ADHD can contribute to that. Not sure where to
Melatonin

I would absolutely put my kid on adderall and then steal his meds

Perfectly said. Can't rely totally on the medicine. It's a constant struggle every single day.

No. No no. From experience, no.

My daughter was dyslexic and ADD. Therapy is not necessary unless there are other problems. You need one on one tutoring for the dyslexia, with a tutor who uses a program based on Orton-Gillinghan. I put her in dance and sports because I think staying active is always important but especially when they are ADD. I decided not to medicate but every kid is different so I can’t say for anyone else.
Also for the dyslexia, help them find something they are good at they will need it for their self esteem. Dyslexia is estimated to be 20% of the population, let him know he is not alone. Stay positive. Good luck.
