I'd just assumed in this thread that the rest of the social media world would continue to exist as is, but we would only have .edu's providing our discourse

In that case frick no. The only voice would then be the "educated" with no life experience. I was thinking more of a facebook for college students only. One where you would need a current .edu to join.

Eaxctly! Yea, we're on the same page. I spent way too much time in both undergrad and grad school, and can still acknowledge I was mostly a freaking idiot at the time. Life experiences matter, alot. Everything is just theory at that point in your life, and social media provides enough echo to turn all kinds of shite theory into a "consensus".

The original function of facebook was its best utility, but, well...billions and all.

TD is social media too. You want to restrict my rights to free speech and freedom of expression? I did Nazi that coming.

Facebook was much better off before they abandoned the ".edu" only addresses and when each school had to be approved in order to get a FB profile.

Those were the good ole days where you could pick up chicks and didn't have to worry about fake profiles or random old people snooping through your shite.

It was only good for like 7ish years I think. The original crowd becoming parents and allowing anyone to join turned it.

Facebook was only restricted to students for the first two or three years.

.edu or the official college email handles.

Did the world benefit or suffer once Facebook opened up to the general public?

In the wake of the Vegas shooting, we have some real special people voicing their opinions...

It wasn't when they dropped the .edu thing, it was probably 6-7yrs later when people's parents started joining. Once I got a friend request from my dad, who is barely computer literate, I knew Facebook had officially jumped the shark.

Some of the dumbest comments come from my friends with an .edu handle.

Agreed. I can remember a day without it.
