The protesters in that situation right after Sterling’s death generally played by the rules of civil disobedience. They gathered in large numbers, were loud but peaceful, blocked streets, etc, and were expressing legitimate public anger. The police screwed up by charging and attacking them, escalating a peaceful situation. It almost got out of control.

A lot of work went into preparing for a second round of protests which was expected upon the announcement of the outcome of the grand jury proceedings. Local ACLU created a training program explaining the rights of protesters and the role of police. I was involved on the outer edge of the effort. For weeks the police were trained on crowd control and the right to gather and protest. Local community leaders and organizers in the black community were given the same instructions so that everyone knew what to expect from everyone else.

The second wave of protests didn’t materialize. My belief was that the reason was the effort by local ACLU to provide the training in advance.

That sort of effort is rare in America and sorely needed. Our system incorporates protests into the basic framework. However, there are rules to the game which must be respected.

Considering the amount of work I keep having to do on this house, maybe I could whip up a riot here in the hood to burn it down. I’d do much better with the sweet insurance money rebuild.
