re: Would NOLA's continued rapid decline help or hurt surrounding areas?

NOLA's decline hurts the entire state with that said the Covington/Mandeville corridor has now become the white collar hub for Louisiana and will continue to grow. The only thing holding the regional business growth down is the DOTD & state political leaders and their piss poor growth planning.
Of course if Mississippi goes to a zero income tax state then all bets are off for Louisiana and the business drain to the Miss Gulf Coast will be huge. Bay St. Louis/Gulfport/Biloxi will explode with rapid growth if that takes place.

the northshore is full of hard drugs and youths shooting rap videos... and has been for years. it's this lily white paradise so many of yall make it out to be.
i believe the 3rd anniversary of the MPD officer being shot in the head with an ar15 by a fleeing SPS grad just passed.
So you're argument of why the Northshore sucks seems almost entirely centered around the actions black youths, who represent an extreme minority of the population here. Interesting.

A monthly “entertainment budget” to a reddit poster is $200

2) there's a lot more cutoff shirt wearing, on probation, tattoo'd chads there than y'all like to admit
3) it's far from "an extreme minority"
eta: also, i'm not saying the northshore sucks. i'm just saying it's not what it is made out to be.

They don’t see anything odd about being mid 30s and thinking it’s a good deal to pay $700/month for a room in a 7th ward shotgun without central air

Louisiana has no suburbs that are on par with those found outside of real cities
I think it’s an underrated reason why business stayed clear of New Orleans and Baton Rouge

i think it's a coping mechanism for the decline of their own towns and cities. look look, it's way worse over there!
It's much deeper than that. The rest of Louisiana has always resented New Orleans. In the Huey Long era, it was because of the wealth and power of the city compared to the rest of the state, combined with a reaction to the general contempt many New Orleanians held for their country cousins. New Orleans also always represented the den of iniquity, which appalled and titillated the more conservative folk. Later, race came into play as blacks gained a majority in New Orleans and asserted their voting power. Many a poster on this site sat at their grandpappy's knee as he railed against New Orleans blacks and warned young junior never to go to that godless, crime infested place. That kind of upbringing is hard to shake. New Orleans obviously has issues but it could be the greatest city in the world in every respect and this site would still overload the internet in Bunkie trying to drag it down.

Agree. When your best suburb’s average household income is less than 75k... good luck getting a deep pool of white collar talent

I like the northshore but i dont fool myself, there are places in other states that are far nicer with much better opportunities.

Right. I know it looks like I’m just shitting on the northshore but that’s really not what I’m trying to do.

We all know the Shreveport Bossier Metro is the future of our fine State. Soon as I-65 and I-14 get built, Alex gonna boom

Who remembers when the OT thought the Lafayette metro was the next big thing?

Houston
Jackson, MS
Birmingham
All of those cities suggest the surrounding areas of NOLA will be fine.

The people saying blow up the bridges crack me up. The traffic on the Causeway is headed into NOLA in the morning and back home in the evening. Likewise from the Westbank into downtown on the CCC.
Many people who live in JP, on the westbank, northshore, etc, very much depend on the city for their business livelihoods. If they aren't commuting into the city, they have a substantial customer base from the city. And even if they don't directly have a lot of customers who depend on the city... those customers depend on the city.
The guy that sells high priced steak dinners in Mandeville is only selling them because his customers derive business income from the city.
If NOLA craps out... all of SE LA, hell all of the state, will be negatively impacted.
Remember when they expanded the Huey P Long and all we heard about was how that was going to open up the Westbank to a massive boom? People were acting like Bridge City and Avondale were going to become the new Woodlands... with corporate offices and housing relocating there. They had a master plan - Churchill I think it was called. How's that going?

About as well as New Orleans becoming the next silicon valley.
Galveston is more likely.

A decline of NOLA might be good for those surrounding areas short-term, but long-term it would be bad. Suburbs depend on the main city.
I love NOLA, but it has a lot of problems. Like others have said, in many ways it has been declining for many decades. Think of its relative standing in the US now compared to 50 or 100 years ago.
100 years ago, Nola was a top 15 or 20 city. Now it's barely top 50.
