I know a fighter pilot. That answer wins. It's just macho as frick.

I have one in my family. He's kind of a nerd, TBH.

Do astronauts even make a lot of money. That's actually an honest question. Is it a lucrative career.

Are you asking a question without a question mark?

Yes I have seen the Brian Regan bit.

Exactly who I thought of when I read this thread. OP just trying to twist Brian Regan's bit into his own.

Shame....

I asked a guy at a bar what he did for a living during a normal conversation. He responded "I'm a pediatric neurosurgeon" like it wasn't a big deal. He wore very normal clothing and he was super nice. Most impressive response I've ever heard. "I'm a stripper" is a close second.

160k??? Not saying that's chump change, but I'd expect an astronaut to be pretty damned intelligent. Like an engineer at near top of class with air fore training ground or some shite. I'd expect more than 160k to spend months of your life away from home.

Granted I guess it's offset by having a 1 in a billion experience.

I would just think those qualified could easily make 160k through "easier" avenues.

Technically 1 or 2 of the astronauts are fighter pilots too right? I mean, so they would be the ultimate badasses? I doubt a navy seal has ever been in space, but many fighter pilots have. Just sayin.

Per the OT, making 160k would qualify you as a poor

Astronaut is pretty cool, but living in DC I've met some others with awesome jobs:

F-15 Strike Eagle flight instructor (female, and yes IWHI)
Social Media manager for NASA (runs NASA's Twitter, FB, Insta, etc.)
Commanding Officer of NORAD
CO of the attack submarine USS Dallas (featured in Hunt From Red October)
Nobel Prize winner

... there are others.

my friends uncle was a space shuttle pilot. he had two missions under his belt. i even got to go to one of the launches as a family member. - not too shabby.

i don't recall him ever being "one- upped".

Book deals, endorsements and public appearances supplement her income. (Guessing) Her first astronaut venture was 15 years ago.

Definitely not a poor, but any engineer with a work ethic can end up there in 5 to 10 years (not anyone, but a smart person with drive and the right foot in the door). Not anyone can get accepted to have the responsibility of an astronaut.

it's probably like the military where they also get nontaxable income like "space pay" or "hazardous duty pay" or whatever.

On the flip side, it's a rather dangerous occupation. But at 56 she may be on her last flight anyway.
