Fun Fact:
The Republic of Ireland was officially neutral during WWII. That made for some awkward interactions between the U.S. (home to more Irish-descended folks than lived in Ireland) and the Republic.

There were some in Ireland who hated the Brits so much that they were not saddened by British losses during WWII. It was a “enemy of my enemy is my friend” kind of deal. This sentiment generally did not extend to their feelings towards the US (once we entered the war).
