I've misused several words over the years, but the most recent one I discovered was the word Laconic. I always thought it was a synonym for lazy. It actually means...

la·con·ic
l?'känik/Submit
adjective
(of a person, speech, or style of writing) using very few words.

My mistake.

What are some words you've misused over the years?

For a while I thought "penultimate" meant extra, super ultimate.

pe·nul·ti·mate
[p?'n?lt?m?t]
ADJECTIVE
last but one in a series of things; second to the last:
"the penultimate chapter of the book"

Not when you spell it that way.

I've been fishing my whole life.

Sometimes I refer to myself as a master baiter.

Not sure if that's the right way to use that term.

For years, I misused the word "peruse", thinking it meant to skim in a cursory manner. I later found out that it means exactly the opposite, to scrutinize or study in great detail.

Like a lot of people, I also misused "hopefully" for a long time, using it as more or less interchangeable with "I hope", as in "Hopefully, LSU will win the game tonight". I later found out that its only proper use is as an adverb meaning full of hope, as in "We are looking forward to the game hopefully".

It can be used correctly either way and since most people use it in place of "skim" you should go back to your old way

Comprise.

It means "make up," Not "made up of." It is incorrect to say that the United States is comprised of 50 states. You either say that 50 states comprise the United States or that 50 states compose the United States.

Impact
when used as a verb it does not mean the same as "affect" or "have an impact"; it means "stop up." Like an impaction.

Using continuous where continual is more appropriate. I think a lot of people do this.

I think the word that I most frequently see used incorrectly is literally.

Evacuating someone else can be quite different than evacuating yourself.

Nauseous. The FBI Director told Congress this week that the email issue made him nauseous.

Wrong. nauseous refers to something that causes a feeling of sickness.

nauseated refers to the actual sensation of sickness.

He should have said it made him nauseated. I had this wrong myself for years.

My uncle set me straight. He said, "You being nauseous is making me nauseated."

I am impressed with the sheer volume of people that can't tell the difference between the usage of the word "rein" and the word "reign". "Reins" are the straps that you use to control the horse when horseback riding.

I have to think about belie (contradict; give false impression) and betray (reveal unintentionally) to keep from getting them confused.
