That part I was aware of. I guess I wasn't clear. What I meant was, why 9, or 9th degree? Why was that considered the highest degree? What is it's origin that denotes the superlative?

Log (as in write down data) and knots.

From British navy. They would throw the log (piece of wood) into the ocean attached to a rope that had evenly spaced knots tied in it. They would see how many knots were pulled out after 30 seconds of sand on an hourglass. Then they would write it down in the log sheet.

That became the basis for "logging in" to computers.

A lot of words and sayings came from the British Navy. 3 sheets to the wind for example.
