Women on the New Orleans City Council - and female politicians in general. I'd like to have a dollar for every hyphen in their last names. Just dumb.

Are you simple? The son is the only one that can carry on the family name by traditional standards. Daughter gets married, takes a new name, their child carries that name.
Son spreads his seed to whores, the family name continues.
Here's my scenario. My grandmother had 2 sons, my uncle and my dad. My dad had 2 kids, my sister and myself. My uncle had 3 kids, all girls. So the family name is 100% on my shoulders. If I don't have a son, my family name dies with me. Fortunately, I did have a son, so now that burden is on him. If he turns gay, I'm going to kick him in the nuts he won't need.
no, i'm not simple ... i'm yanking chains a little, nothing more ... but, i've always wondered why the family name is so important ... if you had nothing but daughters, and you were the only male carrying the family name, would you want them to keep their maiden name or not? ...

That's not that bad it's when they do the hyphenated shite and try and use both names.
Nothing wrong with that if it's for a good reason.
My wife still hasn't changed her last name (been married for over a year) because our daughter, who was adopted before we got married, isn't comfortable with changing her last name yet. Getting her current last name was a really big deal and we don't want to take that from her. The wife and I agreed that doing the hyphenated last name will help make that an easier decision for her when she's ready.

I know two guys that took their wives' last names. Both were in my unit. One was an officer so I didn't ask him what the deal was. the other was a Sgt so I asked him why he did it.
He said his father-in-law was the last of their name and he wanted it to go on (no sons). Plus, the Sgt had a bunch of brothers and his last name was pretty common and his wife's last name was pretty cool so he agreed. He was a good guy that everyone liked and respected so he got no shite for it.
I'm the last of my name and I have two daughters. I've already told them they have to marry guys that will take our name. By the time they get married it probably won't be that big a deal.

I'm just saying it doesn't really matter to me. But if I have a son he will damn sure carry on my family name.

That shite wouldn't fly around my house. If she doesn't want my name, it's time to move on.

Take my name or take a hike.

I'm fine with it. What's a little weird is divorced women who remarry and keep their ex's last name for professional reasons.

My recommendation is don' marry a woman who is unwilling to take your name. She is not committed to you and you will live to regret it.

BTW, it's customary in England for offspring of two socially prominent families to carry a hyphenation of both names.

I hate it when people say the year like it's an argument.

It's meaningless, just like marriage
Let me psychically predict her response.
"If it's meaningless, you shouldn't care either way." Right, but as I said, she's choosing the father's name over yours. No, not daddy over you, and she likely doesn't realize that this is what she's doing, but it's a rejection of your "male dominance" or whatever political statement she thinks she's making. In truth, it's fashion, and party planners will hate you both forever.

The point is that this has been going on for a while. Two things about this thread struck me:
1) The OP's level of ignorance to the world around him.
2) How many guys actually seem to care about this. I guess y'all don't date modern women?
Well, good luck with all your stipulations, guys. You'll be leaving more opportunities for everyone else (ETA: not that a modern, successful, intelligent, capable woman would be interested in a backward-looking kind of guy in the first place, but whatever.)
