Well, to be fair, a man up the hierarchy in the tribe would be EXACTLY who all the women competed for, to secure their and their children's safety.

The details are details. Two specific details for me are that I'm heterosexual and not attracted to fatties.
So the Venn diagram of potential adult partners diminishes by at least 95% of the general populace or more for me.
Who cares? There's still millions of women inside the potential victim circle.

That's a nice theory, but not really how it worked. Being social animals and being in a male hierarchy, if one monopolized the women, one got a target on one's back and a spear in the chest on the next hunt. Cooperation within the hierarchy is and always has been the key to human relationships and hierarchies. The guy who monopolized the women to the detriment of the other men in his tribe got eliminated. And tribal leaders would monopolize in a much smarter way anyhow, by sending their competition into battle. See the Vikings.
Now the other guy's tribe, sure.
