Had 3 removed at the same time about 2 months ago. First two were no problem. The last one didn't want to come out. I thought he was going to climb on top of me with pliers to wrench it out.

Chose not to go the knockout route--regret that now.

The pain lasted a good three weeks after. The pain pills were inadequate. I needed morphine.

Had all 4 pulled when in HS, 1st case on a Friday am, missed school, went out that night to Crepe’s Corner, face swollen like a chipmunk, no issues. Had a script for percodan, eased the pain, went back to school the following Monday. I do remember Dr Carlton preaching about “dry sockets”…

I had 3 cut out in August.

Did they put you to sleep or are you awake for it?

Sleep. I highly suggest getting put to sleep-its much easier for you and the surgeon.

Do you know what drugs they give you? (Mainly if it’s Versed because that does not work for me)

Really not sure.

quote:

How long does it hurt for? Can you use just Tylenol for the pain or will I need something stronger?

The first 3 or so days weren't really that bad at all. Just took tylenol and ibuprofen. No pills at all. Worked fine.

Days 4 or 5 through about day 7 were kind of painful, specifically in the middle of the night, but it was nothing unbearable.

Should I plan to take the next day off of work?

Depends on what you do. If you have to talk a lot or do physical labor, I probably would take off. I got mine out on a Friday morning and just took that day off.

Anything else I should know?

Just make sure to follow your surgeon's instructions, and any time you eat, make sure to plunge your extraction sites(but not until you are 24 hrs out from the surgery), and not with too much force. Don't eat anything hard or anything that's going to easily get lodged into the extraction site. But make sure you do eat, because you'll need protein for recovery.

Don't smoke.

I had sinus issues from the anesthesia I guess, so I was sneezing and blowing my nose a good bit. If this happens to you, just make sure you sneeze with your mouth open, and don't blow your nose too hard.

Don't drink out of a straw.

Don't tongue your extraction sites even if its tempting.

The clots need to heal and you don't want to do anything that will keep it from clotting basically.

Ice your face/jaw regularly for as many days as needed.

The anxiety of getting a dry socket is real, and you definitely don't want a dry socket, but as long as your surgeon is good, your chances of getting one is pretty slim as long as you do what you are supposed to. You'll probably find yourself googling about dry sockets a bunch worried that you might have one, but that will just kind of drive you crazy. Just do what you're supposed to do, and don't do what your not supposed to do, and you will be A-okay.

After about a week and half I was back to eating normal foods, and there wasn't really much pain at all. Just keep plunging until your site is good and sealed up.

If I think of anything else, I'll post. Good luck.

You can definitely tough it out with Tylenol, but they usually prescribe you something stronger.
Don’t forget to ask for 800 mg ibuprofen. They work wonders

I was given a plastic water syringe and told to clean out the hole left behind until it heals. Well, you gotta stick that plastic syringe down in the hole and force everything out. Like, the tip of the plastic needs to be well down inside your gums, not just hovering over the top. I wasn't doing that and food was building up in the hole and it was the nastiest thing you could imagine after a couple of days. Food literally rotting in your gums. It's a wonder I didn't get an infection. .

To be clear, DO NOT use that syringe in the first 24 hours. That's when you want the blood to clot. If you do you'll be increasing your chances for a dry socket, which can feel like a toothache.

Don't drink out of a straw for however long they tell you or you'll get a dry socket

THIS for the first 24 hours also.

Had mine done, all 4, earlier this year. Surgeon said on a scale of 1-10 mine were a 2. Wasn’t bad at all. Had tons of pain pills for recreational use.. I’d definitely go the oral surgeon route.

I definitely wouldn't stick the syringe tip into the extraction sites. You can frick up the clot doing that. As long as you aren't eating the wrong foods, plunging it gently over the site with no contact will work.

What were you eating for the first two days to get food caught in your sockets?

Yeah probably misremembering the timing. It was like a week after surgery I went back because of an awful taste in my mouth. I don't recall what I ate the days right after but I do recall having some potato soup at one point and remember pieces of potato lodged in the socket.
