Breaking news! You are going to die.

That's not fair, you have to actually go to school to be a doctor of something.

You know, this dude once named his boy Sue for the very same reason.

I hate it when people with phd’s in dumb shite get called doctors
I agree. But I don't really mind it if a PhD in physics or chemistry is called "doctor." He went through much tougher shite than an MD.

My dad has a PhD, nobody calls him doctor, just Mr.
It used to be a thing back in the day. PhD's were often called doctor. Nowadays they aren't. They are just Sam Smith, PhD and the PhD is only acknowledged in print, not speech.
Hell today they don't even put it in print that often. I watch a lot of (popular) physics lectures and most of the professors just have their name "John Smith" on the screen. No doctor prefix or PhD suffix. For instance, no one appends a PhD to Stephen Hawking's name, even though he was a professor at Oxford and a Nobel prize candidate. I guess people assume it goes without saying that the eminent scientists like Hawking are all PhD's.

That's just because he was a goddamn atheist commie!

She has more education than 99% of the people who post here, but let's say she isn't a doctor. Eh, sure.

So your only criteria is someone who stays in school longer and not what classes they take?

That's literally what it takes to earn a doctorate, yes.

PhDs were the original doctors. Medical practitioners coopted the term “doctor” in the 19th century and, for some stupid reason, people now think they are the only ones who should get to use the title, even though “Doctor of Philosophy” is almost 1000 years old.
Well MDs are the only doctors that save lives on a daily basis so there is that.

The real question is why do we call dentists doctors

I have a feeling my thesis work was more involved than hers

Good for her. No shame in being proud of matriculating to this point. I would have changed my name in her situation; she has a name so stupid, so ridiculous, it’s absolutely prohibitive to success.
I read she has a 16 year old son but his name is not published. I hope he’s named Hank or Billy or George.
