William Morvant, longtime 19th JDC judge, retiring with `no regrets'

I went to school with his daughter. I can remember going into his first swearing in ceremony as a kid. Really nice family.

19th JDC going to all courts having general jurisdiction. Judge Morvant served his time in handling criminal docket before moving to civil docket. I'm sure that he was not in favor of this.

If I had to deal with Ebonis and Johnsons and Wilson Fields and Trudy Whites as my coworkers, I'd retire too. Compared to even 10 years ago the 19th has few sane minds remaining on the bench.

He was a rare Ivory Tower judge. If you knew the law, you had a pretty good idea of how he would rule.

Quality individual personally. Played golf and attended bar conferences with him 20+ years ago.
But, he was a shite judge every time I argued before him. Tried my second jury case in his court—that was an adventure. I didn’t know what I was doing, and he made sure the jury knew it.
True story: Middle of trial, defense attorney was examining their witness and asked a clearly leading question. I objected and Morvant sustained me. And then added an offhand comment of “You finally got one right” or words to that effect. Needless to say, my client got zeroed. Or basically zeroed—jury gave her 25% of medicals or something like that. Thankfully the First Circuit had mercy on her/me.
Hell, Morvant was already bitch slapping my peers when we argued moot court to him while still in law school.
But, he was a shite judge every time I argued before him. Tried my second jury case in his court—that was an adventure. I didn’t know what I was doing, and he made sure the jury knew it.
