We should elect Tom Cruise as president. He can fix all of this. He's a Level 35A Scientologist and has a midi-chlorian count over 30,000, even higher than Anakin Skywalker.

Tom Cruise. He is our only hope.

There will definitely be a religious revival. Man, as William James (atheist) pointed out, has a basic religious instinct, whether it is channeled into God, the Communist Party, Political Correctness, or ironically enough, Atheism.

The great question for America is, will this new religious movement be Christianity, or Islam?

People consider themselves far too smart these days for a significant movement to occur. A lot of this self perception comes from the amount of information that they are exposed to. This information that they self transfer into knowledge generally runs against the teachings of Christianity. So, no. One has to believe that the Bible is true, and too many don't anymore. I would guide those who haven't completely rejected it to I Corinthians 1.

Yes, there will be another 'great awakening'. At some point, the lack of a spiritual aspect to life will cause individuals to seek something more than just pursuit of the elusive goal of 'success'.

if success is the development of mankind, then that is a worthy, moral aspect to life that anyone should be proud to perform

My question...... is this a permanent trend. Will serious social ills start to emerge that cause folks to seek out traditional answers again?

There will be another great awakening if the internet is destroyed, maybe. Maybe.

What does this mean? Can I not find guidance and inspiration in the teachings of the Bible without thinking that every passage should be taken literally? In fact, it is impossible to believe 100% of what the Bible says. There are passages that contradict each other.

well to be fair, many forms of christianity have adapted the bible to modern life, which has eroded the impact of the Bible itself. we are witnessing this in real time with Islam, as you see moderate Muslims push progressive interpretations of the spiritual text opposing Muslims who are reading the text of the Koran itself

Well, success can mean lots of things. I was using it in the sense of the quest of acquiring stuff...more money, bigger house, toys, ect.

I'm not sure what you mean by the development of mankind. Wouldn't that have to be driven by our various personal views on what's best for mankind?

So, you think a general decrease in religiosity is a matter of distraction rather than of education? I say you're wrong.

Religion's decline in an informed society is because its role in the quest for answers is diminished.

I don't think so in terms of religion. I do believe there will be an awakening/reckoning after the next economic collapse that triggers a revival of free market capitalism away from redistribution of wealth/liberal progressive power grab socialism. It pretty much boils down to the old adage: capitalism is the unequal sharing of prosperity vs socialism as the equal sharing of misery.

sure, but there are some base-level goals that we can achieve

getting people out of poverty
lowering levels of disease
increasing preventable issues with childbirth
lowering levels of violence

etc

and most of those are due to

progressive interpretations
You have a fascinating predilection for progressivism (small p): everything is better now than it was before, everything will be better in the future, we are progressing toward a shared goal

As James Burke pointed out in The Day The Universe Changed, this is a Western view ironically shared by both the laissez-faire capitalists and the social engineering Communists. The Eastern idea of historical cycles is only slowly catching on in the West.

I agree, in light of interpretation. By believing it to be true, I mean as the inerrant word of God.

That is pretty good, but I think things will go from centralized everything back to living local. Losing creature comforts will turn people back to religion IMO.

Following the catastrophes of the twenty-first century—the pandemics, the environmental disaster, the end of oil, the ensuing chaos—people are doing whatever they can to get by and pursuing a simpler and sometimes happier existence.

These are all great and noble quests, but it doesn't fulfill the spiritual void in one's life, IMO. It's the spiritual void which drives the awakenings.

well we have reached the highest pinnacle of humanity and this is due to property rights and free trade proliferating. regardless of cycles, both statements are true

SFP does have those tendencies in his thinking, but he is also one of the few people on here who understands those advancements are predicated on things like cheap, plentiful energy and relative peace.
